Im looking into an S-10 rear end and wanted to know how to tell while at the salvage yard if it's a positrak or not?
I must have both rear tires spinning when im on the go pedal. I don't want a spool either.

His first post and he is exactly right. It's easier to walk through the yard and look at the glove box stickers than get underneath every one to check it. When you find a G80 code, then check it like was mentioned above to assure it hasn't been changed in the past.

Any zr2 model s10 will have the g80 in either a 8.5 or 8.6 rear end. 8.5 had drums 8.6 discs.

(I'm a bit foggy on this right now but I think this is correct...)

S10's don't respond as you'd expect with regards to spinning one wheel and having the other go in the same direction as they use Gov-Loc Positraction.
IIRC those things will spin opposite ways like an open rearend until the governer kicks the clutch packs in.
They need a differential speed difference between axles of 100 RPM or something like that???

Before I'd buy a rearend I'd pull the cover anyway...and that way you'll know its in good shape AND a Posi.

They aren't known for longevity in a high performance application as they kick hard and break parts...sometimes...depending on how much engine and asphalt you throw at them.
That said...I've seen them last a long time in stock 4x4 Blazers and the like.

Im going to put it behind a mild 350 with skinny tires on '40 ford rims. I will rin the cheater slicks from time to time and yes I will be beating the hell out of it. Should I expect to break things with the slicks?
