i ve been a gm tech for 20 years still love workin on cars just gettin sick of the ******** that comes with workin at a dealership that said workin and building my own stuff is waaay more enjoyable aslong a s i can hold a wrench i will be workin on them
I grew up in a Texaco station. I sometimes think I was actually too lazy to decide to do anything else. Anyway, I look back on 36 years of Automotive & then Farm and Ranch , and then Dealerships, trucks , tractors, and the last few years Heavy equip and name it, & yeah I think I really do enjoy it. After hours building hot rods is the best. Yes the work is simular to what go's on all day. BUT, I'm usually all alone in the shop at home. I don't have to mul***ask at all. I don't have to crack the whip over anybody. Or wonder if they can actually do the thing I told them to do. Nope just me bonding with my fender. Really nice most of the time. Besides, I don't have to go out there. Theres alway huntin or campin or fishin or whatever too. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy and Jill a rich widow. Added bonus is I can usually drum up some work when I want to support my hot rod habit. Also I amost never have to borrow a tool from anybody for anything. Of all the work scenerio's that are out there, you will probably like the fleet maintenance job like the Post Office the best. It will be diverse enough to keep you interested, and if you stick with it long enough there wont be anything you can not handle.
im a bike mechanic and im sick of bikes built my first chopper at 18 then it became a job and now i have lost the p***ion iv been playing with hot rods for about 5 years just to build something other than bikes and like thommoina33 said i also turn 40 this year and am thinking about a change just dont know what else to do
If your reading this, you will see the common factor is the older the guy, the less that they want to do both...I too worked in the field for almost 20 years...started to have lots of pains in sholders, elbows, hands, etc...went to the doctor....I never told him what I did for a living....he looked at my hands, started feeling them, said "how many hours do you work a week as a mechanic?" I asked if my file said what I did for a living....he said no, and if I kept it up at the pace I was going I wouldn't be able to hold a coffee cup in ten years...I was in my mid 30's...your in your early 30's, your body does not recover nearly as fast as it did when your were younger, and if your doing it all day long, then going home and doing it some more at night and on the weekends, you too will be seeing your doctor. Auto-technicians are the modern day coal miners.....
My dad is gonna be 64 this year and he still works as a mechanic, I do believe he enjoys it. Although the money can be rough sometimes. When he had his own shop I used to work for him during summer, now I do it for a living. only been about 15 years but I forsee that I will never quit. New, old, junk, or pristine, I like to make them work to their fullest potential. And the money is good where I live. I come down on the weekends and work on my car all day long, it's relaxing for me. I think health comes down to the overall package of life and how you treat it.
