Hey guys so I F'd up my carb and was wondering if theres anything I can do or if I have to purchase a new one? I was replacing my fuel filter on my 61 falcon and didnt like the angle of the fuel hose coming out of the carb to I went to tighten it a bit to correct the angle and help the flow of the gas and when I did I stripped the damn threads in the carb. Is there anything I can do? thanks
I have fixed a bunch of Strom. 97's by making an insert. I take a bolt and drill and tap it to the fitting size. I tap out the bowl to fit the insert.
A real common problem with carbs. Not too many years ago you could still buy oversized, self-tapping fittings for Holleys and certain other models. Maybe they're still available; not sure.
If you're lucky you just stripped the threads and you can fix it like stated above. If you're not so lucky, you've also/or cracked the casting and it's time to find a replacement.
Thanks guys. Ill look into some of those options. I used the thread tape and it still leaks im wondering if theres a bolt that goes in the carb thats longer than mine the threads that are deaper in are fine and untouched. what do you think about gasket sealer for a quick fix?
Be careful trying to rig it up with tape or something. Back in the day I had a guy touch a fuel line on my car that happened to be loose. It came off and shot him in the eyes while it was still running. I was pretty embarr***ed because he was running around the parking lot yelling "Oh MY God I Can't See".
SOLO...auto parts have rebuilt carbs. NAPA has some good ones. and if you get 1 thats not so good, they'll stand behind it. and i don't mean 2 miles back! HA!...POP.
Sorry, I don't remember. Maybe a Holley repair piece or from someone like Mr. Gasket. I'll look in a couple of boxes tonight and see if I still have one. Maybe the blister pack is still around and that will tell us something.
be wary of the rubber expansion type repair fittings, my brother had one on his bowl on a 66 impala and one day it popped out and sprayed fuel and the car was burned beyond even remotely saving it on the side of the 610 loop.
That carb should have an inlet fitting, which is what you stripped. Don't be suprised if about 20 years of carburetors can supply an identical fitting. For what it's worth, the crooked line you were correcting by tightening is a sign of cross threading.
kinda it was a little longer and br*** looking. The inside of the card is what is stripped hmm ill have to check it out. That ****s I hop he had good insurance its the inside of the carb the the fitting wet into that stripped. I took it to carb exchange in riverside and they said that couldnt fix it. he said they couldnt even use it as a core because of what happened and its worthless. I found a new carb at autozone for 189 which ****s compaired to when I paid $110 with the core the first time I bought one from carb exchange.
Are you in this car thing for the long haul or are old cars something you'll outgrow? If you're in it for the long haul, find a junk carb and rebuild it. That's an EXTREMELY simple carburetor, plus you now have a stripped out "parts carb". Whole deal, carb and kit ought to be under $60. De-mystifying carburetors is a huge leap towards being able to make old cars run right. good luck
The pic I posted is an original fitting for the Holleys I have. The repair piece looks very similar except the threads are a touch longer and slightly larger in diameter. It works like a thread tap; cutting its own threads as you screw it into the damaged housing. I looked through a couple of boxes last night with no luck. Even if I DO have one it sounds like yours may be different. This is kind of a 'shade tree' approach but you might try a little JB Weld on your fitting and put it back in the carb. Let it sit overnight and CAREFULLY reconnect your fuel line while holding the fitting with a flare wrench. Not recommended by most standards but it might hold you 'til you can find another piece at a 'bargain price'.
You also can look at HELP parts in most auto parts stores, they have serveral repair parts for stripped carbs..
Don't JB weld a carb fitting for any amount of savings. When it leaks, that's a pressurized leak and next thing ya know, BBQ'd falcon. JB weld might work for a long time. But the consequence is just too high to take any chances. good luck
OK, I found the piece I was looking for. Like I said, this is for a Holley so it probably won't work for you but you'll get the idea of how it works. Also, I just came back from the local parts store and he still has 4 of these in stock (old parts store). They're made by Standard HyGrade and are simply listed as "Gas Line Fitting".
im in it for the long haul. It's my daily driver. I just ****ed it up and ordered a new one. I dont want to change of my car going up in flames I checks all of them and they said they dont carry the kits anymore and most of them cant even order them becaus ecarbs are so old these days. I was thinking about using that lol
The oem carb on my car is a holly 1b. How much is he selling the kit for? Could you pick my up one and ill send you money via paypal?
well at carb exchange here in riverside Ca they are $115 I believe with a core. I found one at autozone for $185 it core. the carb exchange wouldnt take my stripped one because its not fixable so they wanted $225 for a new one because they had to buy a old useable core to rebuild.
