Check out the valve covers for the wag

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by countrysedanman, Jan 7, 2010.

  1. Ive had these old merc valve covers for a while just waiting to make them cool. My brother in law (new Hamber Soundguyslim) and his buddy Bucko worked their paint and stripe magic on them. What ya think, Im thrilled with them and now have to make the rest of the engine look a little better, you know like no more blue plug wires and heater hoses that are all one color. And I think its time to add the performer intake also.

  8. Ya, thats an old pic, the wiring is all loomed up and clean now. Im not sure about the air cleaner, Ive always had an open element but the K&N is not traditional at all. If I stick with the open Im thinking it should be black and striped but am open for ideas, got any/

I think a Caddy air cleaner would look good as well. Painted and striped to match of course.

No air cleaner it will only cover the work done on the covers. Just a nice spun aluminum velocity stack.

Do we still refer to your engine as FE or is it a ME?

  13. Good point, a large air cleaner will cover the striping on the intake side of the valve covers. Does a velocity stack even have a filter, I drive this thing all over dusty *** iowa so it needs a good filter. I found these valve covers on a 65 ford wagon at the local yard, they had all the bolts installed, but when I pulled them off it was clear that eng had sat with no covers, you couldnt see the valves inside the springs for all the rust, I only paid 20 bucks for them!

You don't allways have to use aftermarket parts to dress up your ride, with some extra elbow grease, factory parts can look just as good. Very nice work, will be doing something similar with my mercury y-block covers.

They Are Beautiful !!!! Advanced Plating chromed a set for the 390 crossram in my 57 Fairlane G***er. Gonna stripe them, but haven't gotten there yet. As if these covers weren't impossible to find already, NOW everybody's gonna want 'em. I Love The Striping Job !!!

  23. Slow and not very sure! Between the new baby and the cold temps I am way behind on the short list of winter projects. I will get it though, dont worry. I cant wait for the neg 1 high temps and snow to go away and for summer to get here. You gonna try to make it up this way this spring, like for vintage torque fest? Im gonna try to organize a little cruise over to that deal for the eastern iowa guys.

Nothing against the GM air cleaner idea because most all the stock Ford ones look like ****, but the Caddy thing has been done to death.

Staying in the ford camp, the '83 twin snorkel four barrel Muskrat GT one (also could find them Fairmonts, just not as common), might look good painted up to match your rocker covers.

Going back to the GM idea, any late '60s four barrel one would look great, are fairly common even now, a lot of them are about 14" in diameter with a flat lid, and it's not hard to add a second snorkel to the easier to find single snorkel ones. If you wanted a smaller one, I once found a small diameter one (about 10" with about a 1" or 2" raised lid and a single snorkel) for my Dodge van off an early '70s Buick six cylinder.

That is a real steal some Merc fans are probably gnashing their teeth that they missed them.

It was just a thought on the stack time to get out the non-traditional K&N catalog and find a small filter.:p
