Real time tested patina should come with some, if not years, of time tested history with a story.

A weekend garage or shop story faking patina ..... uhhh , not so much.

Just drive it, park it, lean on it, let your friends put some beers on the cowl... Etc...

20 years of sitting outside most of the time while I've owned it, spent 10 of those years sitting on an open trailer waiting for it's next trip to the drag strip.

When I do get around to painting it I know I will want it to shine, but until then.....

A nice looking 39 Chevy truck advertising your shop? If it came down to identical twin brothers both owning a shop, both doing the same kind of work, but one of them had a nice 39 chevy truck, and the other has a patina'ed 39 chevy truck, i would go with the guy with the nice chevy truck.

It shows the guy cares about details and can put out quality work. The other guy it says he's a slave to trends, only out for a buck, and being rusty is trendy, he can afford to be lazy.

If anyone wants patina and rust, go buy some instead of making it, I've got a deal for you, whatever car you want to put patina on, trade it to me for my '57, my 57 is the authentic real deal patina crappy looking car, it runs and drives great, looks like crap, the kind of crap that 52 years of time and elements can do! Quick you need to save this car before I get the money to actually tackle the body and send it somewhere even more dreaded than the crusher, the paint booth! Act now!

I've got a nice shiny frame off car, and a patina truck. While the shiny car gets all the trophys(if thats what your lookin for), I enjoy the patina one much more. I drive it, rain or shine and don't have to worry about cleaning it up for a month if I get caught out in the rain with it. I still get lots of thumbs up without all the worry and hassel of keeping it spotless. Stone chips, who could see em? Scratched by a baby carrage or careless rodder at a show, who cares. I don't need anymore trophys to collect dust, I have enough. Also why throw a ton of money at it to end up with two vehicles I won't drive if the weather even hints of rain, or have to put my bra on for a long distance high speed run.

OK, so that's what flops YOUR mop... but why is everybody so quick to criticize the guy that likes a little different approach?
How did that wise sage Rodney King put it??? Can't we all just get along? [IMG] <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

    Exactly!

Actually, I make my living by doing high-dollar custom paint work, so I know all about the glitz-n-glamour stuff. In fact, it's been berry-berry good to me. My point is... if ya like patina... capitalize on it, if you like the high gloss custom paint... that's cool too!

Antique people do it all teh time,to make things look "distressed" specially if a part needs to be repaired or replaced,,so that it matches teh rest... I would check out some Antique restoration sites,,as different metals have different preperations

After 10 years of low maintenance on the outside my '32 2dr is taking on a nice crappy look. It still drives like new, has never let me down and every year it's more fun than the last. It's my car, I built it, I pay for the insurance and the gas it uses. If you don't like it SFU. I didn't consult you when I built it and I don't need your advice on how to maintain it. OH!!............and if I don't like yours I'll never tell you.

Shine, schmine - anyone can buy a paint job or spray one with practice. It takes years of serious neglect to "patina" a body. Best way to build a sleeper for the street. Toss on a mis-matched fender and run one glass pack - one muffler. Toss a little Marvel Oil in the gas to get a whiff of blue smoke and then run the bastards into the ground :)

Here's what I'm curious about: if you take a car with decent paint and then damage that paint to achieve a certain "look", isn't that "fake patina"? I'm not knocking it, I just don't get it. If I had a car with decent paint I'd want to keep it that way.

People used to ask me where I bought my jeans from and I'd tell them, "JCPenneys". Then they'd ask, "Are those stone washed or acid washed?", and I'd have to tell them, "Neither, they're wore out". Had I been paying better attention I would have sold them my wore out old ass jeans for more money than I paid for them when they were new:D...and then I could have gone back and bought some more work jeans.

While your going for that fake patina look take a sledge hammer and knock some dents into it, maybe crack or chip some glass. Really give it that aged its been on the road for years look!

This is all that matters at the end of the day.

The guy asked for guidance on achieving a desired look for his vehicle. If you're piping up to say "I don't like it", ya need to zip it. He doesn't give a shit if you don't like it, if he's a real hot rodder.

Ya know what I'D do if I was trying for an " old look " I would brush on many layers of colors and let it set up. [ body shop leftovers I would try for a cheap price] I would not do the whole car the same color , just random slap it on. Then I would paint on some paint stripper and take it to a pressure wash , spray off what wont stick and wet sand it smooth.
