My water pump went, or at least the gasket did so I'm going to replace them both. Looking up parts (rockauto.com) I find 2 different pumps: Hub Turns Counter-Clockwise Stamped Impeller Hub Turns Clockwise Cast Iron Impeller I've looked through my shop manual and don't see any mention of which I need. Any ideas? Thanks!
Pull you pump out and look at which way the fins turn. I believe you need the cast iron impellar, but don't quote me. I ended up buying one from Kanter since my car came with the wrong one.
Good luck with the pump brother,i hope you get it on the road.I would ask kanter auto as they have alot of parts for this.
Thanks Paul, I've checked Kanter and they have the pump too, I just need to pull it I guess and see which one to get. We got my brothers '55 running now too!
Either pump still turns the same way and either will work , just a differant impellar design. The cast impeller pump at Napa is #58594.
Incorrect^^^ Due to the reverse flow design of the early Pontiac v8, 55-60. It is possible to get the wrong pump, which will bolt up but will not efficiently cool. Best bet is to compare your old parts with your new parts to make sure the impellar fins are facing the correct direction.
Well please let me know if someone knows for sure. It will be next sunday before I have a chance to tear into it, so please let me know. Thanks for all the help guys!
Reverse cooling has nothing to do with the direction the pump turns or the direction coolant flows thru the pump. The differance is that coolant exits the pump and enters the heads first on the reverse flow, but enters the block first on the conventional system. Yes, one won't be as efficiant as the other , but they both still turn the same way at the pulley moving coolant thru the engine and has been proven that either will work.
my 55' looks to turn cw. now if the system has belt that doubles back that would make it run in reverse like some late model cars.
