ok i have a 53 customline that has the original rear end which i believe is 4.11 gears. i found a rear end out of a 53 vicky that had a flat 6 originally, my question is does anyone know what the gears were in the flat 6 rear end versus the flat 8 rear end?
Hard question to nail down,,,they offered several rear axle ratios in the '53 Victoria,, HRP Rear Axle: Ratio (to 1) with Conventional Drive 3.90 standard, 4.10 optional; with Overdrive 4.10 standard, 3.90 or 3.31 optional; with Fordomatic Drive 3.31 standard, 3.54 optional
52-54 Fords with 6cyl & overdrive were 4.10, 6cyl w/o overdrive were 3.90's your best bet would be to make a mark on a rear tire and on the drive shaft and compare marks to determine the ratio.Your 8 cyl rears were usually 3.90 w/overdrive and 3.55 w/o.Fordomatic 6cyl usually 3.55 Fordomatic 8 cyl usually 3.31 but on a car of that age you never know what the previous owners may have swapped.
I have 4.10s in my 53 also. There are some excellent tech threads about what other rear ends can be used to update yours to get the ratio you want. You will just have to do a search.
No such thing as a flat 6 in 1953, they had already been phased out by then. As mentioned above, the gear ratio had a lot more to do with the transmission than the engine.
