I'm using a 9" ford from a 57 fairlane in my model a sedan build. I got the backing plates with it but the drums and hardware were missing. none of the local parts stores can get anything to fit it, so I was thinking of swapping the whole brake ***emblies out. Ahybody know for sure what other ford drum brake setups are a direct swap for the early 9" rears?

  2. I used the brakes, hardware and drums from a 66 Fairlane 8 inch on mine. The drums required minor machining to fit correctly.

1957 Ford rear ends come EITHER with the Large bearing or the Small bearing on the axles. :) You have to match up the backing plates to switch them. 8 inch Ford rear end backing plates are ALL the small bearing type. You need to KNOW which size yours are ;)

I like to find a set of backing plates and all the brake parts off a 1965 Ford Galaxie. They can come from FORD with either the large or the small axle bearing  Everything for them ( shoes, drums, hardware ect ) is available at Car Quest and O'Reilly's. NAPA too. I prefer the large wheel bearing ... but the small ones work OK in vehicles less than 3500 pounds.

They are 11 inches in diameter and use either a 2.25 or 2.5 wide set of brake shoes ( the wagons have the larger axle bearings and wider shoes/drums ).

Another added feature to going to later backing plates and brake hardware is the self adjusting brake hardware ... :D:D

Sorry I forgot to put that in the original post. It is a large bearing housing

  5. Go to NAPA and tell the dude to step away from the computer. They still handle all the parts to put yours together, but the guy will have to go to the 900 LBS of books he has behind the counter.

But about any brakes from a Ford with the same bearing size will work. Fairlane, Econoline van etc.

I'm putting 12" Buick brakes on the 9" going on Wilber's Stude. Its just a matter of welding up the holes in the backing plate and redrilling them. I will have to run a spacer rings on the axle end because the locating hole on the Buick drums is larger than the ford but its no biggy.

One thing that you have to bear in mind. Hotrods are not bolt together and almost anything will work wiith a little enginuity.

11"x2.5" drum brakes from a late '70's-early '80's F-100's and F-150's will bolt right on.

I wasn't sure about the axle offsets since ford used a couple different lenghts thru the years, I didn't want to waste my time taking off a set of brakes that would end up not fitting on my housing. As for the f-150 they would have the wrong bolt patter in the drums to fit my car axles.
