    Dude,
    This IS a revenue bill.
Confi****ed cars can be resold. FOR A PROFIT.
Small town cop says I want a new squad car...so....bust the local hot rodder for ANYTHING...confi****e...sell...you get the picture.

I found when I lived there that the local are all about enforcement and strict laws. I'm making book that this will p*** and get enacted. I left there (Cincinnati) partly BECAUSE of **** like this. To me OHIO and NAZI are both 4 letter words with similar meaning.

This is just one more tool for Bureaucrats and Police to use against those of us that dare to be different.

"Street racing" over simplifies the charge. Here in Ontario, you lose your license and your ride for 50 km/h (30mph) over, illegal left turns, standing on the pegs of a motorcycle to shake out a leg cramp... scary stuff!

I would be VERY concerned. Yes, street racing is bad but it's too late to start promoting the race track now. That should have been going on all along (google; Wally Parks).

In Ontario there is hope. please read; http://www.nationalpost.com/most-popular/story.html?id=2254116

thanks for the info. Ohio is a really rotten state anyway.

  5. A most interesting thread...

While **** rolls downhill, the fumes invariably rise UP,and we in Michigan are north of Ohio...you get the idea. Our broke-*** state already has similar legislation in some localities(Detroit area comes to mind),and abuse is prevalent.

One of the offshoots of the seizure aspect is the "salvage" yards picking your ride clean while in impound. VERY common practice here in the Flint area, and has been for DECADES.

You Buckeyes stay vigilant, and good luck with your fight. In the end,it becomes OUR fight.

I signed the pe***ion and mailed the letter about this ****. A quick story came to mind. I was out with a friend one nite in his old Mustang. An 80's Camaro pulled up at the lite. The kids in it lit the tires up when the lite turned green. We laughed and rolled down the road doing the limit. A cop pulled us over seconds later, claiming they were a few cars back at the lite and we likely lit the tires and were racing. These were Cleveland cops, not country bumkin, Roscoe P. Coletrain types. Had my buddy with the Mustang not been a cop himself and showed his badge while explaining that we did nothing wrong, we'd have been busted for sure. Under this new law, we would have lost the car and faced FELONY charges. Read the bill and pay close attention to how much power the patrolman has, your car is a bad day or a stale donut away from becoming the property of the state.

Oh, god, "the Great (Police) State Of Ohio" again! It figures they would come up with a draconian law like this. When I used to drive truck, there was standard joke a**** drivers going through the Buckeye that went "Did ya' hear what Ohio's doing? Starting next month, they're gonna' post a bear (cop) at every yard stick (mile post) along the interstate......and
then they're gonna' lay the rest of them off!!!
"I hope people fight this legislation because we already have similar legislation in Ontario, and if it succeeds in Ohio, it'll come to your state or province next.

please do your research before you upset everyone , were not gonna take your car unless your caught without a shadow of a doubt RACING .

  11. And global warming is real, too. If you think a law like this won't be abused, perhaps you'd like to buy some oceanfront property in Arizona?

  12. Great work Bored&Stroked<SCRIPT type=text/javascript> vbmenu_register("postmenu_4750143", true); </SCRIPT> , hope you have better luck fighting the senators then we did north of the border.

  13. Sounds good, then why write the law that opens up the definition of street racing like this one does? (we already have all sorts of infractions to cover speeding, exhibition of speed, etc).

The 'street racing' definition that was already on the books handled the obvious cases . . . no need to expand the law, just prosecute the offenders under the current definition. This is a cl***ic 'knee jerk' reaction to a bad situation -- hell the guy who caused the situation was drunk and obviously at fault.

Anytime we start writing laws as a reaction to a single case -- we're probably doing the wrong thing. (regardless of the merits of the case).

As I wrote the Senators --> either fix the language or kill the bill . . .

You never been to Ohio, have you? Or do you live in a cave there?
I spent 2 miserable years there and I never saw so many folks pulled over by cops in all the 40 years I have been driving. I only got one ticket there, For FIVE over in a 50 zone.

YOU wrote this proposal, DIDN'T you!?:p

Seriously though, I'll give you ONE thing. It's not law yet. But crimeny, why would you defend this vague waste of taxpayers money? I live in Grandview Hgts(suburb of Columbus) and without a drop of exaggeration, I see at least a dozen cars a day pulled over so they can run plates on everything from burned out license plate lights to no turn on red at an intersection that is not marked. Shadow of a doubt doesn't even factor alot of the time. I got pulled over for excessive idle because I pumped my go pedal at a light. Not revving my engine, not preparing to drop the clutch, but compensating for a weak choke spring so i wouldn't stall. I was told " If you plan on driving your rat rod, you better get it up to code, and watch yourself"
I like to drive my truck, therefore, I have turnsignals, license plate lights, seatbelts(even though I'm not required) and every other damned thing to make me legal. SO, if they're gonna p*** a bill to give THESE cops more power to ***ess a situation, **** that, my friend.

Seriously?!? You think that "any exhibition of speed or acceleration that is inconsistent with the normal operation of a vehicle on a public road, street, or highway" sounds like "shadow of a doubt RACING?" Wow.

another thing that ohio has come up with is if u dont renew your plates before your birthday they fine u 20.00 per auto as a case in point my son had not been driving his pu and let it set for several months but because he did not renew the plates before his b day they fined him 20.00 dollars on the spot when he renewed them to put it back on the road, another money grab because the highway patrol is going broke

I f' in hate politicians with a p***ion. I think the law is absolute ******** and is way too vague. If it even p***es, there will be law suites and appeals to the Ohio Supreme Court. The verbage of the law may get changed to be less vague, but it would take years to fix. In the mean time, expense's are incurred and inconvenience brought on the victims (those of us that get their rides hooked for b/s reasons) of ***hole politicians. Did I mention I hate politicians. The lying *******s! I would love to do a burnout on their evil heads. I'll be writing the senators!!

Wow, just caught this. Glad I live in sunny CA. For once, it makes me feel better about having to drive 10-15 mph over the speed limit all the time just so I don't get killed around here. Of course, if they think my '53 3/4 ton could ever make some kind of 'exhibition of speed', I'd like to see them try to prove it. Now, I could see getting in trouble for 'not being able to exhibit speed'. That is my real problem.

I spent a couple months there this year in Columbus. I got pulled over by a *truly* frighteningly stupid police officer that wanted to seize my car because he didn't know california law concerning new vehicle registration.

I wouldn't trust that jackhole to carry my briefcase, much less judge whether or not I was street racing.

I got pulled over in Burbank, CA for squealing tires(guilty as charged) and the cop let me off cuz he'd have to book me, since that offense now falls under 'street racing'. God only knows how long they'd impound my car for or seize it or what. He was super cool, I learned my lesson.

The amount and variety of speed enforcement in Ohio is legendary. Anybody remember New Rome, OH? It's dissolved now, but it's located right out side columbus.

They always open the door with a law that has a 'good' reason to be created, and quickly things get out of control.

There's a reason why the NRA fights *any* sort of gun laws. If you give the government an inch, they'll take a mile.

    /off soapbox

  24. I knew Ohio was ****ed up when we tried to get from US 30 to I-75 and they were too cheap to put up a bridge, you had a stop sign and then you had to cross two lanes of 65-mph interstate traffic to get from one to the other.

With this law, they could just put a couple dozen cops at that interchange and ticket everyone who tried to cross, because if you don't stand on the gas pedal, the only way to not get hit is to wait until like 4 am when there's no traffic.

Gotta love Ohio. It really doesn't surprise me though. This is the most b***akwards state in the union.

On a side note, the Akron cops have to be the most corrupt ****in squad out there. I dread riding through there anymore. Remember when cops were folks you would run to? Now they are the people you run FROM!

  28. My experience with Ohio is from being at the Mopar Nats in 1990. The cruise on Brice road was over run with all manor of cops, cops with dogs, cops on Harleys, Sherrifs, and the topper a fricking police helicopter with the search light aimed on the crowd! We Canadians are not used to a police state and got kinda nervous, but we had enough chutzpah to give the chopper cops the finger! (poised to hit the deck or take cover if necessary). Saw a guy do a burnout in a '70 challenger and get taken away in handcuffs. It was nuts.

The cool part was that I was staying with my brother at the Days Inn and a burnout compe***ion started in the parking lot. The cops showed up to shut it down and the manager sent them packing because everyone staying there was there for the Nats. It was awesome and went into the wee hours of the morning!

The next day I watched a SWAT team take down a guy in a gas station, guy thrown on the pavement, automatic weapon aimed at his head, boot on his neck, whole deal. The locals just went about their business, and we were freaking out! That was quite at trip.

That said, we do have that fascist law here in Ontario that gives the cops the power to take your car for going 50 km's over the limit or lighting the tires or racing.

I can sort of empathize with busting people for racing and impounding the car, but on any given day you can easily get north of 150 km's on the 401 west of T.O. and just be keeping up with traffic. Ever squawk the tires from a light?

I also love it when hot rodders are so down on street racing, like none of them have ever done it! Does the memory get that foggy when you get older? I used to race on the street in industrial areas of the city all the time when I was younger, and would entertain the idea now if my truck was roadworthy. How many times did you find a quiet road outside town to see how your rod launched and ran it balls out through the gears?

Anyway, this law ****s and we didn't get a chance to have a say about it, it just went into effect one day. Democracy?

I grew up in Akron, Ohio, left for the Air Force and settled in Arizona. I was a police officer for 26 years, then went to the fire dept as a cop for the last 11.
Many of the laws that are enacted torque me off as much as this one is you guys. I used my discretion using common sense as a guide. Using danger to the public, p***enger safety, at***ude, etc as a guide. But I was and still am a car guy, so I have to admit, that influenced some of my decisions :)
Peoples' opinion of police is usually based on their last contact with one. I don't ID myself as a cop when stopped because I feel that that would be hypocritical. I've received tickets as well as warnings and have actually been threatened with jail because I made verbal note of their at***ude. I've had good contacts and bad and the bottom line is that it's a cross-section of society like any other.
And to the guy who said that Akron cops are corrupt, you can't base all of them by a few, but my cousin's husband was an Akron cop, and he was corrupt!
    Thx for letting me ramble!
