So i need a bit more height in the front end of the nash, and i was wondering about ball joint spacers. Im using a 69 Camaro clip, and how exactly do they function? Also, hows streetability? I wanna run a taller tire, but my fender is limiting me by like an inch and a half. Please forgive my ignorance, im just a young kid
put some taller springs up front. if you're gonna pop the ball joint, you may as well put the springs in and go..
The ball joint spacer is a connection between the ball joint and the spindle. What it dose is extend the dictance between the spindle and ball joint. This takes the upper control arms away from the upper frame stops giving you more front end travel or in your case allowing you to raise the front end and still have extension travel for drivability. If your going to use this setup make sure you use steel ball joint extenders and not aluminum ones for safety. Good luck!!!
if you use somthing like a hardened aircraft aluminum, would they be ok? Also, how long should i expect to make them? Any pics? Please and thank you!
Well said choke. It ALLOWS you to put longer coil springs in so as you say the a-frame doesn't contact the bump stop. Lippy
look at my extensions they were made by genuine suspension you can see some pics on my profile " the 60" i used springs out of a 70 monte carlo they were 2 inches longer and about 40 pounds lighter spring rate than the originals
The best ones are the ones that bolt between the a frame and the ball joint. I had a set of the ones that go between the ball joint and the spindle. This kind would be hard to make as the holes have to be off set to maintain camber. I had them in a 65 GTO years ago. My wife was coming to get me when I got off second shift and one of the grade 8 bolts that attach the spacer to the spindle broke, laying the tire out. She had to call a wrecker to move it off the street. She was very unhappy and I was quickly convinced to remove them from the car.
i also spaced my lower control arms down to correct the geometry probably a little hard to do on a camaro though!!
He nailed it. They won't let the static height go up any without taller springs though. The theory behind them is that they let the front end come up higher on launch.
I can get you an N.O.S. pair of steel ones from the 60's, he only has one set left. But you will need taller spring too. They are off set on top and bottom. You turn them to adjust you caster and camber. Imagine that you have the top ball joint disconnected and you pivot the spindle and drum on the bottom ball joint in a circle, that is your range of motion which will have to be adjusted once they are in that car to make your front end work right again.
these are the same thing i got! There was a guy in hot rod about 8 years ago named rick delgado!? His 55 has them ! Type in genuine suspension lift kit and it should pull up his article !! Better pics than mine.
I found a guy who has tooled up and is reproducing the old "Genuine Suspension" lift. Search Gen-suspension lift, and look for my posting. Has pictures and info.
Im doing a First Gen Camaro front suspension now. Howe makes extended ball joints for GM's, you can also convert to the screw in Chrysler style for more height. http://www.howeracing.com/c-510-howe-precision-ball-joints.aspx Better option than big block springs to get tall 1st Gen springs would be Speedway, 5 inch diameter http://www.speedwaymotors.com/ProductSummary.aspx?free_text|10/4/2010%205:41:28%20PM=coil+springs+5+inch&deptId=0&first_answer=1 spring rates arent listed on Speedway site, you'll have to call them, remove your existing springs, check ride ht and order a taller spring with around 350 lb / in, trim it to the size you like. The springs you have on the car now are probably original to the subframe, stock replacements may get you the ht you want?
