I know this is probably a stupid question, but I'll ask anyways. I've been flamed on here enough, I can handle it I am picking up my Mom's 1960 Corvair. It has some rust on the center of the rims.....any way to stop it or make it look (not so bad)? ...or do I need to just pony up and buy new rims?
Try some Mother's Mag and Aluminum polish and a soft rag. It won't "fix" it but may make it look a little less obvious if its not real heavy rust. Good Luck!
those wheels would make great bases for grinder stands or better yet "hose reels" for air or garden hose! snap some hubcaps over them. cool corvair though.
Go buy some evaporust and soak the wheels in it, that'll remove the rust. Once they're free of rust, you can wax them or get some zoopseal to put on them to prevent them from rusting again.
Your right, that is a cool corvair but I dont want anything in my garden to remind me that the eighties happened!
Many of those wheels were coated with a clear plastic material. It didn't hold up well and would hold moisture when it cracked. Rust on those wheels is inevitable. If the plastic is gone you might try some 0000 steel wool to clean them up, then keep a good coat of wax on them, but it's almost impossible to keep them rust-free.
If you can find Quik-Glo chrome cleaner it is the BEST IN THE WORLD. It will bring them back to life. Gotta search tho, the quit making the stuff. As far as I can tell this guy is making/selling it again. http://www.quick-glo.com/
SOS pads work, make sure they are wet, wont scratch the wheels, then a good coat of wax and keep an eye on them.
000 steel wool and good chrome polish,....well my chromer uses Turtle Wax chrome polish, and thought he was messing with me when he said it was the best he ever used. I still don't believe him, I use Mothers, or the "Blue Polish" and others
You need to paint the car FLAT BLACK and the wheels RED.Then when you put on the wide whites no one will notice the rust. I have clean rusted chrome before and although it looks better for a while it always seems to come back.Cause i ain't too big on cleaning my car.I do like your Vair though.
After I sos the chrome I'll spray some "chrome paint" on a rag and wipe it over the rusted area, the paint will only stick to the rusty part, then I polish the piece with chrome polish, works gooder. -Shiny
Blue scrub pads tend not to scratch (safe for teflon, etc). Green scrub pads make great sandpaper. I wouldn't do that. Buy some spray acid wheel cleaner at your local auto place. Spray em down and let them soak per the instructions and hose em off. Use some Mothers chrome polish and a terry cloth rag to finish them off. Then snap on some Moon discs!
If you ever try this you will want to thank me in person. Go to a Big Truck supply (semi, 18 wheelers, etc) and get some of the acid that they use on the aluminum. The stuff I buy is Aluma-Brite. 50-50 water and chemical. Spray it on hose it off. Dont leave it on too long. The stuff works miracles, try it on s**** stuff first if you can and dont get it on your hands or in your eyes, its bad stuff. Once you get the hang of how to use it, it will change the way you look at rusty chrome.
Turtle Wax Chrome Polish. Works great and thats what it's made for. I use it all the time on motorcycles and the cars.
As far as I know they are 4 on 4-1/2 (114.3 mm). Should be able to find something here: http://www.roadkillcustoms.com/hot-...p?LugCount=4&StudSpreadInch=4.5&StudSpreadMM= Wheel Vintiques has smoothies and rallyes.
Early Fords are 4 on 4 1/2", Pinto's, Mustang II's are 4 on 4 1/4". The vair needs a set of aluminum 5 slots IMHO.
