I am running straight megaphones on lake style headers. I was looking at removable baffles and came across Dynatech Vortex Insert Cones. Has anyone used / seen or heard these?
I've known a couple people who ran those, but it was always in conjunction with a couple mufflers on each side. These were streetable drag cars and they did help to keep the noise down at lower RPM's.
We have run them on our racecars. Still VERY loud. They won't pass at any track with a db limit. They worst part is that they are as expensive as a good muffler. They would be great to keep the open header look, if they actually worked. Kevin Ooltewah Speed Shop
Get a cherry bomb. Cut it in the center. Then cut the outer shell off at each end. Shove it into your header and secure it with some screws. 20 bucks and done. Just make sure you leave enough of the outer sheel to put some screws in it
Kevin - You're right. Don't "muffle" much sound. Used in IMCA and UMP a lot for local rules at tracks near homes. Kill's some of the sound at high RPM.
you can use just the ends but My next set I'm going to leave the core in it. It will lokk kinda like my bad drawing when done
What about something like this? Cut Pie Stripes in the outer shield, flatten the small end, and slide in until the large end bottoms out. The megaphone walls should work like the old shield. This is using the 12" CherryBomb with the 8" element.
I used them on my flathead with lakes style headers and noticed no difference. they're pretty spendy For the results they give, in my opinion.
I like that but if you do it the way I describes you can use one mufler and have two baffles an your drawing is much better
My friend used those cones, didn't quiet the car down that much, better off doing real mufflers or bullets or something.
I used the speedway header baffles. they are 3in around 7in in length I just cut one end off and then slid it into my lakes header. I put a screw in the bottom and then capped it off with the turnouts that are also available through speedway. works great and the local PD hasn't said a word.
only thing i know about the cones is; they lost 58 horsepower on a 400" small block, on alky over a "regular" dyno tech muffler : (
installed them on lakes style headers with turnouts.reduced noise about 30%(as advertised)but i wish they would reduced it more.O well
Here is my attempt at the lake header baffles....this worked good, but it required a good packing material like I listed in the thread. You can see it changed and evolved as it went. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=305759
