Im looking at picking up a car that was last registered in 1992. How many years does it have to be for it to be "out of the system"?
You are better off Calling DMV's 1-800-777-0133 number and ask Status on the VIN or plate #. If that car got a Parking ticket or any other violation in the time it hasent been on the road OR has had any inquiry on status Before the 7 years were up it CAN still be in the System. I have been around this block Many Times.
You need to dial "0" after they tell you the days they will be open & closed to Talk to a LIVE person. Automated voices wont tell you a Damn thing.
On this same note.... is it like registering anything else? Normally I just walk in with the ca. ***le of what I just bought, pay the fees and walk out with my new paperwork. On a car that has "dropped out of the system", is it the same, or do they want to verify VIN's and such? FYI.... '66 VW, last registered in '99. California ***le.
If it's out of the system, they will want to check the VIN. I've also heard that they no longer drop vehicles out of the system. Anyone know if there is any truth to this?
Don't know, but I was told by a DMV drone that they wont put vehicles back in the system that have timed-out. Now, I don't believe that for a second, but it meant that I was not going to get help that day. It seems that the law is whatever your window-person says it is that day. No rhyme or reason at the CA-DMV.
Just as an example, say they have 1500 windows in the state, you WILL get 1500 different answers on what you have to do. When you come back with that info, if you dont get the same person you will be told "you dont need that...you need this" The main reason I escaped California
You "escaped" California because you got 1500 different answers? Perhaps you should stop asking so many questions!
they never fully go out of the system if its been registered since computers, they will probably want a vin verification. I go to a registration person (like AAA) she knows the people and does my funky stuff when the dmv person is haveing a good day.
they only go out of the system at a local level, sacramento still knows the scoop, in most cases (for cal reg) skull
a general rule for when you get a nasty, stupid, ignorant DMV ***** is to politely ask to speak to a supervisor. I had a DMV lady tell me once how I was wrong and she had been there for 16 years blah blah blah about how DMV back registration fees can be waved for a cl***ic car if you are a car collector. supervisor came over, looked it up and found it. my buddy with the same expired registration problem on an old car thought it would be better to debate with the lady behind the counter. he left pissed and with no registration for his new purchase.
