The problem is there are so many variables. Blocks can vary several pounds due to cubic inches and casting, same with heads. Then factor in the weight difference between aluminum aftermarket parts vs. factory ones.

I have a factory 283 4-jet intake that thing has to weigh 40+ pounds. I also have an Edelbrock performer rpm air gap....maybe 6 or 7 pounds...

I ran performer rpm aluminum heads on my little pickup, they were VERY light...I don't know the exact weight difference, but I would venture a guess at 20 lbs + or - PER HEAD..

Things like that make a huge difference. Make sure you account for all the goodies you plan on running when you are estimating.

575 Sounds like a pretty decent starting point to me too, but I would say my trucks engine after it was all said and done with lightweight parts was probably in the 475-500 range.

    hope that helps,

    Scot

If you can just go to a junkyard and find a junk engine that isn't fixable and hollow it out. That way you will know where to put your mounts and such. You could always add weight to make it where it shoud be. They also have those plastic mock-up engines. I just use a hollowed out engine and a muti-patteran bellhousing for mock-up.

  6. I have a windowed 327 block I use to mock up. 575lbs is a pretty good number for an all iron SBC. Aluminum heads and intake can drop that weight down to just over 500lbs.

Why are you guys so **** about the word rat?? Lets all jump on the band wagon. Rat rods are bad!! give me a break. The Rat rod term was fine to use till everyone on this site started crying. Now more people are snubbing their noses to the word. What would Rat fink say with all his rat rod pictures?
