So I'm helping a friend convert his 63 fairlane that has a, I think, 296. We've got the alt mounted but have a question about the wiring. Were using an internally regulated 3 wire alternator and are wondering the best way to bypass the factory regulator. Because I'm assuming it will have to come out. Thanks in advance.
I assume a 260. Basically you connect the big wire to the battery + One the 2 pin connector one wire connects to the big wire. The other wire connects to the idiot light. This voltage from the idiot light energizes the field of the Alt. Once the car starts/runs, the voltage goes to 12V when the light turns off. I can't remember how the two wires are labeled and which is which. But this is basically how all 3 wire alt connect whether it is GM or ford. The regulator needs to be removed. Basically the big wire that enters it and leaves it is connected together to provide power to the dash. The idiot light wire can be spliced with field wire to provide the idiot light function. Google it, you'll find some wiring diagrams. Doug
Its a GM alt. So basically right now I've got the number 2 post jump to the big terminal on the alt and the number one wire terminal hooked to the field wire that runs to the regulator. Does that sound about right?
