besides a Ford Granada, what other ford front suspensions fit mid 50's ford cars?? and what year of granadas and others work??? thanks Baggs
Granada front suspensions do not fit '50's Fords. Perhaps you are thinking of Mustang II style suspensions, but they don't fit, as is, either. Most MMII conversions require, at minimun, a crossmember, and in the case of '50's Fords, a front frame stub or "clip" manufacturered for that purpose. Granda brakes are often used on MMII spindles with suspension conversions, as are some intermediate GM and other aftermarket brakes. Granada spindles/brakes are often used to upgrade Falcon/Comet/Mustangs from the 60's to disc brakes......but that is spindle/rotor/caliper, not suspension as such. Ray
The Granada front suspension is a common way to get disc brakes. I know it works on 57-up with some ball joint taper mods to the Granada spindle. The same basic spindle is the Mustang, Maverick, etc. If you find a disc brake version of those, I think they work. People just call it the Granada because they were all disc, and those cars are eaiser to find. They are good donor cars.
What 38 Chevy said, but let me add, he is talking about a spindle swap not the whole front suspension. The 6 cyl Granada spindles have 10" disc, V-8 Granada used 11" disc's. Also, the Lincoln Versaille used same spindles as the V-8 Granada but they don't need the ball joint taper mods because they are already larger holes that fit the 50's ball joints and if you find a Lincoln donor car you might find the disc brake equipped 9" rear with posi also. A couple other things, if you are planning on running stock wheels the neck of the hub/rotor around the outer wheel bearing is too big and won't let the wheel seat against the disc brake unless it is machined smaller. Also you will need to use a larger master cylinder and a proportioning valve.
I put the Granada brake set up on my '54 Ford all I had to do was get the bottom ball joint hole reamed out to fit the lower ball stud, everything else bolts on. If you can find a donor car be sure you get everything from the firewall to the spindles it makes this swap a one aftrenoon deal. Also I had to open the master cyl hole on the firewall to fit the power booster, and drill two new holes to bolt it on. I done my car about 15 years ago and have done a bunch for friends it realy is a good easy swap.
I know of one 57 Ford that has the front spindles, brakes off of a 72 Torino.Guy said it was an easy adaptation and only had to heat and bend one part which I have now forgotten what it was. From what I have read, mostly any mid size Ford cars are a good donor vehicle for discs on the 50s Ford cars.
Actually just a little incorrect. Granada's are used to do front disc brake swaps on mid 50's fords. I just did the swap on my 55 Victoria and all I had to do was ream the bottom ball joint and bolt everything on. Pretty much a straight swap.
I used these on my '55 t-bird and another thing you get with the swap is 1" drop in height. A.P. Photography, the spindles also work with the Falcons, Comets and Mustangs mentioned and in that application it's usually a bolt on deal without having to ream the lower ball joint hole.
Yeah I knew that, maybe I should have said "also used on the mid 50's Fords". Guess bad choice of words. lol
I used a76 Granada on my 54 i used to have. Just have lower ball joint hole reamed to fit. Everything else is pretty much bolt on.
did the granada swap on my falcon. its nice being able to buy pads, rotors, bearings calipeers at any parts store for cheap.
