I like the side draft idea...and since I am a motorcycle guy, I instantly thought of an S&S or a Mikuni. I have a Mikuni on my chopper and never had any problems, or needed adjustments, or anything. Would love to put 3 of those on my 52 chevy. Would look bitchin' too!!! More bitchin though, would be 3 S&S L carbs. Always loved the look of those on a old Harley engine. Just a thought.

Anybody now which motorcycle carb (3 of them) would be the right size, and not too spendy? You can see I am getting out of my comfort zone now. Hope I'm not jacking this thread.

Here's the deal on the carbs:

    Stromberg BXOV 2: 210cfm

    Carter YF: 200+cfm

    Rochester: 200+cfm

    Stromberg 97-Ford 94: 150-185cfm each

So just because the 94 is a 2 barrel does not mean its a bigger carburetor. Dickster recommends triple 94's on a stock 239 cu. in. flathead. So this overhead valve 235-261 cu. in. engine should have NO PROBLEM using all these little 2 barrels can put out. Add a 848 head, Patricks cam, and good compression... Starts sounding a little better right?

This is all just speculation up to this point, so all views wil be looked at until we can actually get this thing on the dyno and do some testing.

Keep the comments and questions coming, hopefully we will be able to give an educated answer.;)

  3. i have a 235 in my 62 impala. no plans on V8ing it any time soon. My last ride (51 styleline deluxe) had a 235 with Fenton splits and an OFFY 3x1 intake with roch Bs on a solid linkage. Isky cam, pertronix pickup. ran like hell, mated up to a 76 camaro 4spd and torque arm rear end,it had a sound unlike anything on the road!!!

BUT... in the 62, i dont have ANY clearance for anything but the stock air filter, which i dont have. an intake manifold for different carbs or even just the single that were slung lower than stock would work great, maybe even side-dreaft carbs as well.

but we'd always buy a good priced split header setup. thats a given!

Ak Miller ran a two part article in consecutive issues of HRM in 1967 concerning hopping up a 200 Ford six in a Mustang, and he modified the stock integral intake manifold to use four side draft motorcycle carburetors, but I can't remember what size or make they were. It might pay to look up the artice and read it. Ak was always pretty inventive, and didn't let unorthodox methods bother him in his quest for more power.

If you decide to build a setup for 250 or 292 I would be interested.
    Looks really cool!!!

Hi! I would be very happy if someone would take on the task to cast an aluminum timing cover with possibility to mount a mech injection pump.
add some fins to that and the world would be a better place.:D:D:D

You guys are really on to something with the intake. Thanks for taking time with this.

I personally like the "old" stuff, that is still being produced. I had a 235 with an Offy manifold and split exhaust that just looked, sounded and ran right. In all honesty I believe that your ideas are great but would err on the side of caution with your business venture. I know alot of inline guys that want that vintage look, and the drivabilty afforded by those parts. Your product is new, and I belive that will work against you.

Old stuff is great and we all love it or we wouldn't be members of this site. Opinions are great too, some better than others, but all outlooks are being considered in this product. We have no intentions of putting anybody out of business, just offering another option. If you want an intake with 50 year old technology and like the single barrel carbs, then by all means use them. I'm not sure how much drivability your gonna get out of it, but it's your deal.

Our deal is.... An intake that offers a few more options. Our intake is just as "Vintage" as a new Fenton or Edelbrock that came out of the mold last month, but with a carburetor setup than actually has some performance potential. As we all know, new Stromberg style carburetors are being manufactured by several different companies.

All inline guys have been stuck with no options for so long, they might as well be into that vintage look.... Because that was their only choice.

It's hard for me to believe that any inline guy wouldn't be into a sand cast intake, with Stromberg carburetors, and the option to use 2, 3, or 4 of them in any way they choose. Not to mention have a header that does not leak.

Thanks for your input.... We appreciate it.

my original thought on the sidedrafts was to rob the 3-4 carbs off of a old 650-750 honda, but a simple conversion....235CI is over 3,500cc's.... So i'm guessing it would be a wee bit under carb'd :)

And the side drafts that they used on the vette's don't exactly grow on trees.....

The side draft idea will be DOA if we can't find an affordable side draft set-up to rob....

I really dig your idea's, and love that style of intake. its different and cool, and gives more possibilities with currently available products, technology and performance. I think the biggest killer is going to be price. If you can sell these for comparable prices to a repop Fenton, or Offy I think you'll be in fairly good shape. if you could sell them for less, you'd be in even better shape! But if its any more than whats already currently available, I think you'll lose out. Any idea on what the final price might be?

No final price yet, but it will be more than the Offy or Fenton. It will be 100% made in the USA. Offshore just isn't what we are about. We know we will not sell a ton of them, but if we get our money out of it, we will be fine. This isnt a labor to make money, its because we like inlines.

If you know any pattern makers and foundries interested in small runs of hot rod parts, send them my way. We want to work with hot rodders

Just a question about the design. It looks like you have one flange the whole length of the head, with holes for both the exhaust and intake, then the intake manifold bolts on over that. I'm assuming your header pipes would be welded to the main flange? Is that how the stock one works or do they use separate flanges that fit in together with clamps holding both down?

The stock intake/exhaust setup uses one set of bolts and butterfly clamps to hold both pieces together. If you want to take the intake off, the exhaust comes off too.

Our setup uses a totally seperate flange for the header and the intake. The header stays sealed the the head if you want to take the intake off. All the ports will be sealed with industrial grade high temp o-rings. No leaking gaskets to mess with.

What about Weber 45 and 48 sidedraft carbs? They aren't that cheap but they are versatile.

No so far fetched. The Honda uses one carb per cylinder and usually like most cycles,no big balance tubes between the carbs to share the mixture. And bikes turn way higher RPM's than old 6 so the carbs may not be silly small. But a set from like an older 1100 cc rice rocket might be better.
Put the cycle carbs on a common plenum log intake.
Harley big twin or Sporty 70's-80's Kehien(sp) carbs are relatively cheap at swap meets.3 of them should be sized about right.I bet they would carburate pretty close right out of the box.

Hey guys, why not go for the Carter YH carbies. That's the same one that was used on the Corvettes, Corvair Spiders, and I think Nash.. Anyway, they are still available and not real pricey. I have done a good number of them for Latham blowers.

Thanks Dickster for the advice. I'll start looking for the side draft carbs, so if anyone has any they want to trade or part with, I'm your guy.

We are still looking for suggestions or interest in this set up. what say ye??

I love the idea of the intake/exhaust being more serviceable. One downfall of the old stuff is the relationship between the intake and exhaust. I've had clearance issues between intakes and headers and had to do some adjusting with a grinder to make things fit. I bought tube headers that wouldn't clear the bottom of an aftermarket intake ect. The carb mounts being a 3 bolt would be a big help. Not needing adapters for strombergs or holleys would be a plus. Or you could make them 4 bolt for the late webbers, those are cheap serviceable and work very well. As far as the header goes; there has always been issues with how tight everything gets on that drivers side. If you could figure a better place to dump the exhaust, as apposed to right on top of the steering box, that would be a great improvement. A good linkage set up to use the stock gas pedal but not have to come up in the center of the intake would also be great.
I love the idea. I say run with it.

What kind of fasteners are you going to use? It looks like the fasteners holding the flange to the head would have to be flush with the surface of the flange, then the intake fasteners would thread into the flange itself or?

The header bolts can be any kind of 3/8" bolt, because they will be using the original bolt holes in the head. The intake flange will have a set of studs that will be threaded into the header flange. The intake studs will be totally seperate from the header bolts. If you look at the pictures you will see that we turned the intake flanges 90* from their original mounting position. This was so the intake and header were seperate pieces instead of using one set of bolt or studs to mount them both. Follow?

Yes, these will be cast aluminum. What you are looking at in these pictures is a prototype made out of steel.

Thought I'd share this bit of info regarding carbies on a six.

An Inliner friend of mine has a 50 coupe he races at the drags - he used to own the record for his class. He runs a 261 bored with a cam and extensive head work, 4 speed and 5+ rear gears. He lost the record to a 50 with a bored and welded cranked and stroked 261, 4 speed car.

Anyway he thought he'd go from a 850 Holley 4 barrell to a 780, thinking it was over carbed.

He lost over 2 tenths on the quarter consistantly. Went back to larger carbie - got 'em back.

He told me the best determinant of carb size was your vacuum guage - not the cfm rating of the carbie you run.

    2 cents spent ;)

    Thansk for the info Stovebolt.

I've had several people tell me that 650cfm's is what we need to shoot for on a hot 235-261 street engine. So I think we are real close on our 4-carb intake setup. We are gonna dyno this thing till we get it right.

    Stay tuned......

How about an update? What have you decided for/against? Do you have a projected date when intakes might be available?
