I have a '62 caddy 4 door, 4 window. Doing some research on them I came across the fact that only 2,600 "town sedan" models were made. One website says the letter code in the vin # representing the town sedan is "A", but another site it is "C"....anyone know? The town sedan has a short deck. Since I only have the one, I don't know if it is "short" or not. The trunk lid is 34" long. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Town Sedan is a 6289 Code A. The other "short model" is the Park Avenue Sedan DeVille 6389 Code G. They are 215" overall length. Regular sedans are 222". These models are shortened from the rear axle back and retain all other interior dimentions and sheet metal.
Vin #62A008701 trim tag says "62-6289"...so according to the vin tag letter it is a regular 4 door sedan, but the trim tag says it's a short deck town sedan
i have one. ill have to go look at the vin # but i think the "c" means town sedan. if your used to looking at them they are quite abit different.
Ok...so with that being said, I have a short deck then? Any idea on the rarity/desirability/value of it? It is 100% complete, motor is there but torn apart, all gl*** is good, hardly any rust, all bumpers are good and straight....
just went out and measured it...looks like it is 215" bumper tip to bumper tip...so now what?? Build it or sell it? Any ideas where to look up the trim tag info?
Here is what I foud out so far. I believe all to be correct. 4 door short deck sedan Built 2nd week of August Production #363 of only 2,600! Black/White cloth interior Olympic white paint Power front seat A/C I have three total caddys and this one was on the chopping block to sell. Might want to keep it now if it is a rare or desirable model. I don't really know too much about the short deck cars (obviously) Thank you guys for the quick responses and help.
Deville Town Sedan and Park Avenue had an overall length of 215" According to your vin,you have a Town Sedan. Vin breakdown: 62A008701 62=1962 A=62 Town Sedan; 4 window, 4 door. 129.5" W.B. 008701= 8,701 off the ***embly line More info: Production:2,600 units Model:62-62C Style:6289C Factory Price:$5,213 Shipping Weight:4,590 Lbs. * V-8 - Overhead valves * Cast iron block. * Displacement: 390 cubic inches. * Bore and stroke: 4.00 x 3.875 inches. * Compression ratio: 10.5:1. * Brake horsepower: 325 @ 4800 rpm * Five main bearings. * Hydraulic valve lifters. * Carburetion: Rochester four-barrel Model 701930. According to my info, your overall length should measure 222" from furthest point in the front to the furthest point in the rear. So,you would measure from the most outstretched peak on the front end to where the lower skag on the rear ends. Tip to tip should be 222"
wow...thanks for the breakdown SO... now the question is how much it's worth I believe it to be all original. Black and white cloth interior, white paint, 98% complete. Missing the rear skirts. Only small rust spots on front fender rockers, rear window has tiny spec, floors solid, trunk solid. One dent on rear roofline (b pillar i guess). All gl*** is in there and not cracked. Interior is complete 100%. Trans is there, motor is there but torn in pieces. Bumpers are straight and chrome is good. Original black plates....
No offense, not very desirable, that's why they were low production. Maybe $2500 at the most for the condition it's in. If you got it running, you may be able to get about $5K
The style number says it all; 6289 = Sixty Two (series) Sedan, Short Deck That is odd, because the VIN on a short deck should be 62D. Are you sure the style number isn't 6239? That would be a long deck, 4-window sedan. No had to confuse the '3' for an '8'.
Just went to double check...Style #6289 No offense at all about the price stuff...I just wanted to make sure I didn't have a diamond and sell it for the price of coal. Thanks for all the help guys
hres some history for 61. seems the "town sedan" was a special edition made for well to do folks with smaller parking structures. <TABLE border=0 width="100%"><TBODY><TR><TH>1961 CADILLAC DEVILLE</TH><TD> </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE> Cadillacs were restyled and re-engineered for 1961. The new grille slanted back towards both the bumper and the hood lip along the horizontal plane and sat between quad headlamps. New forward slanting front roof pillars with non-wraparound windshield gl*** was seen. The revised backlight (rear window) treatment had crisp, angular lines with thin pillars on some models and heavier, semi-blind-quarter roof posts on others. A new short-deck sedan was situated in the 6300 lineup, ostensibly created for rich dowagers with small parking stalls in their luxury apartment houses. The DeVille models were retained as the 63 sub-series (which was technically part of the Sixty-Two line), but the Eldorado Seville and Brougham were dropped. This moved the Eldorado Biarritz convertible into the DeVille sub-series. DeVille models featured front fender series designation scripts and a lower body "skeg" trimmed with a thin three-quarter length spear molding running from behind the front wheel opening to the rear of the car. Standard equipment was the same used on 6200 models plus Two-way power seat and power windows. The Biarritz convertible also had power vent windows, whitewall tires, Six-Way power bench seat (or bucket seats) and remote control trunk lock. The new short-deck four-door hardtop appeared in mid-season and is often reffered to as the Town Sedan. <TABLE border=1 width="100%"><TBODY><TR><TH>Model Number</TH><TH>Style Number</TH><TH>Body Type</TH><TH>Seating</TH><TH>Factory Price</TH><TH>Shipping Weight</TH><TH>Production Total</TH></TR><TR><TH>61-93B</TH><TH>6339B</TH><TH>4-door 4-window Sedan </TH><TH>6</TH><TH>5498</TH><TH>4715</TH><TH>4,847</TH></TR><TR><TH>61-63L</TH><TH>6329L</TH><TH>4-door 6-window Sedan </TH><TH>6</TH><TH>5498</TH><TH>4710</TH><TH>26,415</TH></TR><TR><TH>61-63C</TH><TH>6399C</TH><TH>4-door Town Sedan </TH><TH>6</TH><TH>5498</TH><TH>4670</TH><TH>3,756</TH></TR><TR><TH>61-63J</TH><TH>6337J</TH><TH>2-door Hardtop Coupe </TH><TH>6</TH><TH>5252</TH><TH>4595</TH><TH>20,156</TH></TR></TBODY></TABLE> NOTES: The Style Number 6399C Town Sedan was the short-deck four-window pillarless hardtop sedan introduced at mid-year. Four-window sedans received more orthodox rooflines but still included a pair of short-deck variants, which were now named Series 62 Town Sedan and DeVille Park Avenue. seems 62 had a short deck town sedan early in 62 production and then they started callling it a Park Ave sedan later in production. Motor serial numbers took the same form used in 1962, with the first pair of symbols changed to "63" to indicate the new model year. Applicable codes were stamped in the same locations on the cars. The alphabetical body identification code "C" was no longer used, since the short-deck Town Sedan was dropped from the 62 Series. However, the short-deck 6300 model, called the Sedan DeVille Park Avenue, was retained and used the same "D" body identification symbol. Rooflines on two-door hardtops were restyled, which brought a change in body style coding, but not in the alphabetical suffix.
Actually,it's not that simple. Cadillac can get confusing when it comes to model numbers. They ran a Town Sedan with the DeVille 6300 sub series, those started with 63,as in 63-62(Insert initial for body style),then you had the 6200 series which is the base series for Cadillac,as the DeVille was a bit upper cl***,then Fleetwood, then Eldorado. Some had different body style codes, this includes the difference between a DeVille Town Sedan and a Series 62 Town Sedan. What he has is a series 62 Town Sedan according to the body code, etc. as confirmed by his vin number.
