Have a 63 Comet auto trans. May want to swap the engine as it seems to be pressurizing the top end.
Wondering what more modern engines may swap directly without having to swap the trans.
Just trying to get an idea before I tear into it.

    Thanks in advance.

260 and 2-speed Merc-O-Matic? Maybe someone else can clarify but I don't think much more than an early '5 bolt' 289 can swap in with that trany. Those 2 speeds are considered a dog. A 302 + C4 is a nice cost effective combo in an early comet/falcon.

well being a 63 you would have a 5 bolt bell housing pattern limiting you only to the 260 and 289 that have the same pattern which i think was only up until 64 and then they went 6 bolt. so not many options. why keep the fordomatic anyways? get an overdrive youll like it much more.

Upgrade both, it's worth it. 302/C4 ruled after doing the 260/Fordomatic for so long! My Comet was pretty fast then, it ****ed with the 260.

Been down this path too many times trying to save the 260. It ain't worth it. Dump the 260 for a 5.0 HO with an AOD or a T5 and never look back. It's well worth the effort and really is not that much money if you look for the right deal. A good motor and ****** can be had for $500.

I've got a 289 5 bolt short block I pulled from my ranchero. It was running when I pulled it. I've had a few people interested in it for $100.00, but no one has come through yet. On the other hand, my philosophy with the ranchero was if you are going to build it do so. I ditched the 289/3 speed for a 5.0 and a T-5. As far as old ford transmissions from the 1960's go the C4 is probably going to be the better upgrade from the ****-o-matic, and by then what is the point of a 5 bolt block. 5-bolt C4 bell housings are rare and usually expensive.
