Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Mike Landwehr, Dec 4, 2004.

  1. no pic yet .but just had an offer on my 67 mustang-
    1.$1000 cash in payments
    2.a 1954 Ford Victoria ***led lic driver w a 302 ford motor/stick,new brakes/clutch
    3. a 305 /auto mounted and wired in restorits (now mine )40 chev 4 dr sedan.he will do a turn key w new exaust and driveshaft, so now I may have ANOTHER ford if I go for it,sheez people must really hate these cars , I get offers of trades for 1953 to 56 fords almost weekly now, at least 10 to 1 compared to any year chevy trade offers.
Are these mid era fords dead horses or is it a area thing ? hell w/o seeing it I'm thinking I'll go for it,prolly change after I do or just drive the hell out if it. always liked vicky's

I don't know, I really like the 56 and 55 Fords, and the 53's and such make cool mild customs.

Shoebox refers to the '49-'51 models. I think the reason for more Ford offers of that era is the same year chevys are more desireable.

  9. yan im think so too , I know of a number of em for sale and have been for quite a while, all priced about the same as same years chevy's , chevy's sell, the fords sit, I'd p***, but its a hdtp Victoria non gl*** top and I always liked those.

    Mike,
I'd jump on it! A '54 Ford Victoria hardtop makes a really nice custom. And easily, too. Nose and deck, maybe swap some trim, make up a custom grille, lots of taillights to choose and all bolt in no sweat.

And if you ever come across a gl***top in a junkyard you could make a really desirable model (though an oven in the summer sun!)

Not sure why you see more Fords than Chevys, though. Maybe it is a local thing. Are there many lowriders in your area? The Chevy is the favorite with that group. I always thought the Ford was a more advanced and stylish design in those years.

Oh, and are you saying that the same offer includes $1000 and another engine for your other car? Or were those other people's offers?

    Dave

  12. no, thats the TOTAL offer from one guy, all of that plus a semi build of restorits old 40 4 dr now mine , he's on his way here now w it.

It's disgusting when they refer to 55 Chevy's as shoeboxes.
It happens all the time and I just hate it. All us old timers know it's 49 to 51 Fords ONLY!!!!!!!!! [IMG]

I'd have to go for the installed 305 deal, Mike. You could be cruisin in that 40's car you wanted by this summer. The ford offers will prolly continue to come in and you can always pick one up later..
Personally, I love the 52-54 ford body style with the rocket ship 1/4 and tailight styling. And a sbc almost drops in place!
    390 ford is a good choice too. I'd love a 54 business coupe. I'd search high and low for a BIG F.E. engine for it..a 406, a 427 or a 428 with a 4 speed...

Just for perspective, LeRoi "Tex Smith" calls all Fords, '49-54, "shoeboxes". Ain't saying it's right, just pointing out how this notable author cl***ifies them. [IMG]

  18. Rocky, the 54 already has a 302 /4 bbl and its turn KEY w new brkes /clutch and exaust needs an interior ,His 305 /350 is going into the 40 w a new wireworks harness for air cond.(it has a underdash unit in the trunk) ,the 40 is getting a new driveshaft and exaust as part of the deal as well, all on his ticket and part of the deal(this leaves me w a spare 350/350 for a g***er project ot that Ply cpe.
so I am going to end up w 2 driving cars and a grand cash , tough to turn down thing is his wife wants a early Mustang and he has very little cash ,he wants to give it to her for christmas, I know his work and he does some nice stuff, tho a bit slow as all the good ones are. I tried to get him to do work for me b4, but he is picky and reluctant to work on other peoples stuff ,Just have to play it by ear and see where it goes. keep those pics comin lol, I'm likin the talilamps on that one. Ron

  19. The mustang is a decent start but no show car, lots of neat stuff w it but ,did'nt think it was worth all that he offering well not to me anyway , I'm thinking of selling the ply now , i'm ending up w too many cars again

Tex Smith is one guy I have followed and respected for many years, I even contributed tech articles to Hot Rod Mechanix a couple times. But he's wrong on this one. I think he moved to Driggs Idaho to clear the cobwebs out. 49 to 51 Fords that's it.

  21. lol we went though this last year , I think its an area thing or maybe even the drags , , here all 55-7 chevy's AND 49-55 fords were called shoeboxes , at least from over hearing ford conversations , I always deemed ANY post 48 ford beneith me (and they usually lost, but don't hold it against me, I raced a chevy at the time), everyone at BIR that raced 55-7 chevys called em shoeboxes when i raced there (more like a brick), but when we went through this last year it was the common consensus that it was used in reference to 49-5? fords first AND even included old magazine articles to prove their point,I still bow to them on it , That Tex smith book is kind of what caused me to ask -LOL now THAT aught to get things going-LMAO

Stand back and look at em. What do ya see when ya look at a 49 to 51 Ford? A shoebox. Do ya see that when ya look at a 55-57 Chevy? Do ya see a Shoebox when ya look at a 52-54 Ford? When Henry redesigned the 49 Ford he took the fenders away and made a slab sided car, thus it was named the Shoebox. Chevy's were never even involed in this deal.
    I rest my case.

  23. Just came in from outside tom is here w the 40 sedan WAHOO! COLD AS HELL lol OK, OK, i agree , not trying to start it again, heh heh , I only said what i saw, heard and read, I'm NOT a 50's to 60's ford guy (tho you would'nt know it by looking at my yard right now)so i only know what i am told.

  24. just got back from Pine river w pics of the 54 -the deal has sweetend a bit , this car w 302 /auto (cause my wife can't/won't drive a stick), complete turn key driver when delivered ,THEN he is putting a sbc 305HO/350 in my 46 Ply coupe, everything done except exaust and brakes, but turn key w engine swap -wiring /radiator and driveshaft done
2 g's cash in $200 Mo. payments (I KEEP the ***le)
    Perf. RPM intake+ holley
Lunati 270 dur. cam and lifter set ,
2:02 heads w roller rockers ,Not a bad deal from my way of looking at it,
Ok, so lets start the pics -

I love the '52-'54 Fords. They're my favorite fifties Fords, followed by '55-'56s, '49-'51s, '57-'58s and '59s. Honestly, I'd be proud to drive any one of them, but the '52-'54s just seem the most clean and businesslike to me. The sharp edges and "light" appearance would make for great hot rods when stuffed with a hot FE or MEL with a four-speed. A nice rake, stock trim and some chromies and I'd be all set. Maybe some T&R on T-bird buckets too, but not much else. To me they're as nice as tri-five Chevies and they're less common at shows and stuff.

    I'd even like a more-door with a 360/C6 combo for just drivin'.

  28. floors , the seats are in the rafters of his shop and nice shape w no tears, dirty, but usable blue and white checked
