Vin #'s are where on a 49 Ford???

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by desertratrodder, Dec 2, 2004.

  1. If the guy I bought my 49 Ford Club Coupe from cant find the ***le, I'm gonna have to get another. To do this the DMV has to verify the vin numbers. They want to see two in different areas on the car.
I see numbers on the firewall, is that one? Is there another one somewhere?
I need to know where to show them, because they dont know where they are.
    Thanks

I never needed to show two numbers, but I go to the CHP. Did you ever get that 351 from the guy?

  3. I was thinking about going to CHP, but you have to make an appointment and it can be months away.
Oh and the truck I will be towing it with isnt registered [IMG]

There is a set of numbers stamped on the drivers side firewall, those are NOT the VIN numbers. The VIN is on a small plate riveted to the p***enger side of the firewall. Also, I think VIN's can be found on the drivers side top of the frame above the rear axle. Also, if I'm remembering correctly, there is a stamping of the number on the front of the frame somewhere between where front wheel is and the front bumper bracket, but I can't remember which side its on.

This should give you a start of where to look.

I THINK I read somewhere that those numbers tell you when & where the car was made, engine type, color and options. Not 100% sure but I think that's what it said in my "Everything you need to know about a Shoebox" book. You want me to look some numbers up for you when I get home tonight?

You are correct. I had the same problem with my '50 tudor when I went to register it on a frame from another car that was totalled. The number in the center on top of the firewall is actually an ***embly number for the factory.

I went through the CHP first and they gave me a VERY hard time. He even asked me how hard it would be to pull the body off of the frame to check the numbers. What a crackhead. Anyway, I went home and bought a $3 FoMoCo little black/aluminum plaque thingy, and bought a set of punches at ACE hardware and stamped them in myself so that the numbers now matched the pink slip for the body. (the pink still did not match the swapped frame) I went back to the DMV, waited in line for the attendant to inspect it, got lucky, and went home with plates. I would try the DMV first because most of their books do not go back past the early '60s. At least at mine they don't.

Also, there are some independent places that will help you out with registration on your vehicle, and they don't charge very much. You can even tell most of them your true story, if you had a frame swap or something illegal like I did.

Where do you get that? The little tag under the hood is gone. They took it off to put in the heater. It was held on with 4 rivets. The number on the front of the frame, where exactly is it?
Is it under the bumper bracket or?
How many digits is it supposed to be?

A neighbor gave me a 49/50 ford 2dr the other day. Both doors are missing along with the hood. I will check the tag when we go to get it. (Within the next two weeks) He said it used to belong to my cousin?? Price is right $00.00 and he is going to use his tractor to get it on my trailer. Too much rain lately. There is also an old ford p.u., maybe 49-51?? What a deal! I'm just going to add it to my personal bone yard.
