54 desoto + or - ground

    i have the opportunity to buy a 54 desoto. the car is still 6v. i havent been able to find much info on the that year desoto. im wondering if it is a positive or negative ground system.

    I thought only a few 1930s GM trucks were positive ground, along with many European cars. I stand corrected.

    My first car was a '54 DeSoto Firedome sedan, it had a Positive ground, 6v system. Don't forget about the left hand thread lug studs on the left side of the car!

    thanks again. now that that question is answered. how much of a pain would it be to convert it to a modern 12v system?

    I've never done it but there's a lot of how to's on this forum.
    Basically, you'll need a 12 volt battery. Connect - to ground. Flip the wires on the distributor. Have the generator rebuilt for 12V - or get an alternator. Change all the bulbs. And I think you might need some reducers for some gauges. Starter should be fine.
