...A chopped and dropped '21 coupe, full fendered, with hot T running gear...If you kept it simple and subtle, it would be wild and very different.

I alway wanted to do a '26 coupe like that with kinda the same stance, style and look as my roadster.

personally I do not like Chopped Ts. Also I am not sure how well the glue would hold when I put it back together (structure is all wood, nothing like the later ones).

Well, I can’t do anything about your not liking chopped T’s, but I think the glue would probably be fine. Some of the modern wood glues are stronger than the wood itself.

The glue comment was meant to be a joke. Even turning it into a roadster it will be redone in steel structure.

Well It has been a while since I posted anything new and at the request of a few fellow H.A.M.B.ers, I thought I would put up the latest progress.

I have been busy on the roadster over the last few months taking on the interior. In the end, I will have gutted the car and replaced everything. I started with the floors, replacing the steel ones I put 2 summers ago just so I could drive it, with an original hardwood set from a mid 20's Chrysler...complete with worn-in heel marks below the clutch and brake. Next I took the T pedals out and welded in a set of Model A pedals so that they would drop into the floor...giving me more foot/leg room. The steering column supports were cut loose and the column was moved up to provide more room. At the same time I replaced the O.D. shift lever with a longer and more elegant one I picked up at the swap meet last year...topped off with an original '30s Ford "V8" logo shift knob :D. The "get me through the summer" seats are out and a new set of seat springs has been cut down and is awaiting upholstery which, for this car, will be it's "Pièce de résistance"! The seats will be done in leather, but not just any leather....I was lucky enough to obtain some of the ORIGINAL and well preserved leather from my good friends 1934 Rolls-Royce PII Continental (bodied by J.Geurney & Nutting of London). The bag that he and I found had all of the pieces from the front bucket seats and is enough leather to do the entire car. Even had both of the pleated inserts from the backrests, which are the right size and length for seat back in my roadster!

I still have a few more things to tackle such as re-doing the dash from scratch....I am still in the design and layout stages with that. I also have to get the finished toe boards around the pedals made up. Here are some picture, will have many more soon.

Wow, just wow. I don't know what impresses me more: your ability to ferret out late-'20s and early-'30s parts, or your skill at tastefully combining them.

Great job Clayton. You're hard work shows. It's cool some of that old stuff is being recycled in such a cool way. Seems a shame that a lot of that old stuff never gets out and now that someone has the abilty and skill to use it. Hope to see your car again soon

Man, that looks like a ton of fun! I've got a '27 T roadster, but it's a late 40's/early 50's build, so I won't clutter your thread with pics of it. What are the seats out of? Are those originals?

BTW, check out this thread on 20's era cars:

I have sead this a thousand times, but I can't say it enough: Thank you for the all the great feedback and compliments on my roadster...It really means a lot to a newbie in this hobby. I enjoy finding neat and oddball parts and making them work, because I love using parts and doing things that are different and unique..to make people take a second look, give 'em something you don't see everyday.

    Junk****er,

The seat frame and springs are a mish-mash of parts, but the wine colored leather I have is the original hides from my friends '34 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental Touring Sedan which was restored between 1977 and 2000.

BTW, thanks for the great thread link!

Here are a few more shots of my new headlight/licence plate bar I didn't get loaded last night. I had to redesign it because it was in the way of the handcrank.....kinda got sick of mashing my hand into it evertime I started it.

  16. Yep! Got 'em now. It must have been due to the server problems they've been working on. Looks great.

I have some questions but I think I will PM them to you.

Everybody's favorite car, and mine too. Inspiration for my '29 Phaeton that should be getting to Tonopah day after tomorrow. Hoping that the instrument panel doesn't have to change very much. None of my binness really but it's one of the car's strongest points. Just looks like a guy layed it out in 1934.........exactly as it should.

I've got a daughter in Rockaway Beach. Next time we're up for a visit, I'm hoping to connect and do some pics of your car with my antique cameras. One of the cameras has the curtain shutter like the ones used on the 1910's race cars that make the wheels egg shape. Some pics of that T at speed with egg shaped wheels would be to die for. Fun stuff. Can't wait to see the ruby seats.

Printed that middle picture from post 284 at 13X17. This is just Model T **** here

    Jim,

Thank kindly! I don't intend to change look and feel of the instrument panel at all because because I wanted to have the look of being layed out by a guy in his garage in 1934, just want to refine the quality of construction a bit and correct some layout issues I have had for some time.

I would love to meet up next time your up for a visit! I have plenty of photos of my roadster, but no good period looking at speed photos taken with vintage cameras...and I agree, they would be awesome! I know the effect that your talking about...there is a photo of the 1st Indy 500 winning 1911 Marmon Wasp that shows this technique.

Well, I have been making progress on the new dash for the roadster and I thought I should post up some teaser photos. It is not finished yet (got a ways to go yet), but I think it is turning out pretty good. I wanted to wait until I had it done for the "big reveal" but I guess I finally caved and I wanted to get the "stamp-o-approval" from my fellow H.A.M.B.ers.

I'm not changing the general shape of the dash or the appearance much from the original design, but I am refining it quite a bit and changing the instrument layout completely to a much more symmetric and logical layout, while keeping with that "laid out by a guy in his garage with hand tools in 1934" look that all of you really seem to like. The dash itself is a slightly altered duplicate of a '26 Chrysler "50" original dash and the cluster plate in the center is also '26 Chrysler, which will hold the Tach, Waltham Clock, Fuel Pump, choke/throttle knobs and the dash light. I do have quite a few more "aces up my sleeve" for this dash that should really make it "pop" more than the original....but you will have to wait and see when it's done :D

    Stay tuned for more!

    Clayton

Consider an engine turn pattern on the dash panel?

Actually the original dash was skinned in aluminum that I engined turned. It became a favorite "touch" for a lot, so naturally it was one of the original features that will be incorperated into the new dash.

The photos I attached in my last post show only the steel "base" dash panel to which the aluminum face panel will be attached. Below is the original dash.

    Hello H.A.M.B.ers!

So I finally got the new dash for the T pretty much done, save for a few little finishing touches. All gauges (except for the Tach) are working and the old Motorola radio is just for show until I get the rest of it hooked up and working....but I did get the dial to light up when you turn on the dash lights!

I also have a bit <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; ch****t=utf-8"><meta name="ProgId" content="Word.Do***ent"><meta name="Generator" content="Microsoft Word 12"><meta I recently got my new radiator back for the T, which was a custom job that took some time to build up. When I took it in to have it built I intended to use a '26 Star radiator shell on the car so I had the new radiator set up for it. In the mean time however, I have been running my car with a stock radiator and Model T shell and have become quite attached to it to say the least. The problem is that the T shell won't fit on the new radiator with the Star brackets installed, but I don't want to just cut them off because he did such a nice job on them....so the question is....

Run the Star shell or cut the brackets down and go back with the T?

Try the Star shell for a while, you can always go back, and it may end up looking good.

  27. Cut the brackets and run the T shell-

Clayton, mock up the Star shell to see how it looks, but I would personally stay with the stock T shell.

The great thing about your car is that it seems to have just the right amount of tasteful changes. I have a feeling that you may lose that if you start messing too much.

I feel the same. I loved the look of the Star shell during the early days of the build but the T shell just looks WAY better and cleaner....I don't have the heart to change it. The T shell IS the look of my car now, not the Star...it would make it a completely different car.

The star would also require me to make a new hood too.

Well, looking at the mock up, I like the Star shell, but it no longer looks like a Ford.

There's only one solution: Find a Star to work your magic on.

    PS Are those USAF coveralls?
