Once again, sorry for the lapse in time between photos. I have been tied to household projects for two weeks now. I squeezed in a half day to continue on the driver's side of the rear window. On to the pics.........

When its that old, any amount of doors are cool! Yeah i used EMT for bracing. When i saw the price of box tubing I about shit. I went over to my friend big box store and bought 40' of EMT for about $6 :) When its all welded in, its as strong as you will need. Not like i'm running an Outlaw class at the dragstrip, afterall. I'll check your page out, and drop you my $0.02. Thanks for the coments!
Thanks...so far so good...the scary part is over...now just all the finish work which is very tedious. If you try and rush the finish welding it comes out like crap, so i find doing a couple hours at a time gives a consistantly good quality result.

Thanks MercMan, I would never have thought of using that. So do you get the EMT at Home Depot or somewhere like that ??? Also, please refer back to my original post - I was curious about your tack welds on the rear window passenger side....

I apologize for posting pictures on your thread, but here are a few of my trunk squash that I did on my '49 Chevy. Took 6-7" out of it to streamline the arse a little. That was a pain in the rear - figure if I can get this done, I can do a chop. :) (First one is before, second 2 are after....)

dude that looks nice you have the skill and i dont think posting a pic on someone's post is bad i take every pic as a learning tool and if your pic is related to the subject man throw it in we all can study and learn from each other that way we all get our rides done
i could tell it was e.m.t. cause im an electrician
i was going to use it for quick bracing aswell when i lift my body off the chassis again
if our going to use it it's very cheap but you have to clean the spots your going to weld

I agree about posting pics....might as well throw some pics up. I am as interested in other's projects as i am my own. This is a community, afterall!

Before i forget, yes, i am just filling in the areas with weld. I would put some filler pieces in there, but they would be so narrow and small, that as soon as i struck an arc, i would probably blow right through it. My way is more time consuming, but hell, i'm married....all i got is time! :)

P.S. Any Lowe's or HD will have EMT. I got mine at Lowe's i believe.

I've always found it's easier to cut bang or drill on sombody else's car than it is on you own. you're over the hump--take your time and have fun with it.

Sorry for the long time without posting updates. I have been an electrician, a landscaper and a handyman for the last few weeks, and the car had to take a back burner. I did manage to get a day in the garage today, and snapped some pics. I added the filler piece behind the rear window on the passengers side, and completed most of the finish welding. I threw the trunk lid on in the last shots to make sure i liked the flow of everything. I am really pleased so far.....on to the pics!

Well thats good that you are getting them going young. I wish i started on cars when i was that age. I didn't get into it until i was about 15-16.

So how did the welds turn out? Did you have any problems w/ warpage and did you have to do a lot of dolly work?? Just curious - I am just about to the point of cutting mine... I have been practicing some O/A welding, but think I'll end up Mig welding the sheet metal - not sure yet - if I can get the O/A down, may go that route.

I can't wait for it to be in primer!
I did it all with a mig welder. Patience, patience, patience. Lucky these cars are 19 ga sheet metal. That makes it a bit more heat tolerant. I still had to sort of "hunt and peck", doing a tack at one end of the seam, and going to the other end, than back again, all to keep the panel cool. I am not done yet, but i probably have 60 hours into just the back window. I'm sure professionals do it quicker, but i wanted it to be perfect.

Sorry its been so long since i have updated this thread. 80 hour work weeks since the summer has halted my work. Fear not, the Merc is still snug as a bug in a rug in my garage. I'll be getting back to it in the next few weeks or so. Pics to follow!

    I'll do one better: Here's a vid of one of the last passes of the year. I pussied out and let out of it at about the 1200' mark :( It gets a little hairy going 130+ with only 10psi in the rear tires! <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/mT6BVn0RMUU&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/mT6BVn0RMUU&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
