Has anyone done Air bags on a straight front axle? Im trying to get some ideas that work well and look good. Im not into the whole shock wave idea.
I have been thinking about this recently and looked into it. Turns out someone makes a cross member that welds in above the axle. It houses the bags and two bars go out horizontal towards each end of the axle.Iit looks almost like a arms. Hope that makes any sense. Also I would think you could make some sort of bar that bolts to the original spring mount in the back and bolts to the axle. Then fab up to more bars to make it a front triangulated 4 link. Its very similar to four wheel drive setups. I will look for the crossmember picture and post it if i find it.
try this site out http://www.nitrostreet.com/1929Chevy.html and this http://www.rodandcustommagazine.com/hotnews/135_0410_traditional_air_cen_pen_speed_shop/index.html hope it helps.
Yeah I saw that crossmember its a nice idea but Ive been hearing for a better ride and handling you want the bags as close to the wheels as possible. I havent heard any reviews on that setup though so you cant really knock it.
I like the first idea on http://www.nitrostreet.com/1929Chevy.html. The only thing is how do the bags and brackets mount to the axle?
I guy on the HAMB sells a kit Hammer dolly I think. I have used his set up worked very well. I modified his design and ran 151 mph with it on my coupe at the TX mile. Best thing about the design is it is very hard to see the bags.
H.A.M.B.er Hammerndollie has one too: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=158518 With this one, and the CenPen setup, the arm that the bag rides on attaches to the spring perch, via a shackle, where the original spring would have. Since the force is applied there, it is not much different than the bag being right there. Like with the setup seen here: http://www.nitrostreet.com/1929Chevy.html Both setups apply the force of the spring in much the same place.
My 27T truck has the CenPen front cross member. Pretty nice. 5+ inches of travel. Go here for the most recent pix of my build. Then to Part 1, as it has shots of the front frame under construction. Here is the Cross member We offer. I designed mine with steel spring halves so that they can withstand any flex that may occur during the ride. Aluminum spring halves will not allow for any flex, and I would imagine cause a lot of bushing wear. I may be wrong. Either way, our kit come fully welded with bags, ready to weld into your chassis for $600! Contact Gary for more Information. Mike Gary Trout Bad Influence Hot Rods 812.667.6448
this car has that type of set up: I spied up underneath it when it was at cacklefest in bowling green.
