A small project that might be of interest...

I kept running across these Mallory coils at swap meets and was never able to find one that worked. They're too cool-looking to throw out, which is why I suspect there are so many non-working ones out there for sale! This link is to a short slide show of how I finally rebuilt one to use for my straight eight Packard project:

Very cool and informative...looks like Ive got myself a small side project now...thanks for the pictures.
Ive seen pictures of these coils with a coiled spring which wraps around the insulator, but mine doesnt have it. Does anyone know what post of the coil it actually hooks to?? Did all the "Best" coils have it? Im guessing that its some sort of resistor?

The coiled "spring" is an external resistor. Mine had it originally, but it interfered with the terminals on the replacement coil. The terminals on the replacement were located in much closer to the centerline of the coil-- that's why I had to modify the insulator. It wasn't possible to re-attach the resistor wire, as it would short out on the terminal posts.

Thanks for the insight and the answer. I agree, with the 180 degree spacing of most + & - coil posts, there is no real way to "dummy" in that spring and not chance something shorting out.
