theyre out there. just have to stash spare money and wait until the right one for your situation comes along. Many have jumped hastily after the wrong car (expensive money pit) because they were in to much hurry. far cheeper to find an already running car than to build up a project yourself anyway.

The folks on this board telling you to forget it and concentrate on school do so because they wish they would have. I wish I would have too.

I understand the desire to want to play with something on the weekends. I do it myself.
I would suggest waiting especially if you intend on putting in the extra effort you said you would. Trust me, you won't have much free time on the weekends. If you do, then you missed something. We as instructors are trying to cram a life time of learned technology and fundamentals, theories and science into your heads in the short amount of time you are enrolled. 4 days a week 5 hours a day at Wyotech isn't gonna get it done, the rest is up to you.

At our school students are there from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm mon-fri and there is never enough time. My student's spend on average another 5 hours after cl*** each day and most of thier time on the weekends studying.

Remember it's not the bookwork, or the papers that matter. You aren't there for a grade like in academics. THIS is a skill set and a foundation you are learning for a career. Most of it can't be taught, it's learned. What you put into it is what you will get out of it. The resources however are endless.

Anything is possible if you don't know what you are talking about. Remember that if nothing else.

  3. I am 18 and yes I am working on accomodations now. Everyone has a hobby for some it is playing sports, for some video games, etc. I don't like sports and don't like video games I like old cars. I do really well in school so I am not just some dumb you kid. I have already been talking to buisnisses for after college because I am proactive.

I didn't think I could start a thread on the HAMB about my future but I guess I can now. I have tried starting other threads on here and they have gotten deleted this is a pre '64 traditional hot rod and custom forum. So yes you come on here to talk about cars. I will probably just buy an S10 in the long run who knows or maybe I will get something old.

  4. Well, atleast someone gets this thread. I care more about education than anything man. It's just this isn't a traditional school thread it's a traditional hot rod thread. So I came on here to talk cars.

You didn't start a thread about reliable cars ,you asked about COLLEGE CARS,

Now that everyone is telling you how it is ,you don't like it.

Sorry, thats not how it works on the INTERNET ,

You post it ,WE reply ,You like it or NOT !

Like everyone one has already said ,go to school ,work at doing good and getting it done and over with, then worry about a cool fun car ...

Like TULSA asked HOW OLD ARE YOU ?

    Grow up !

  6. Thanks, they will probably be kicking me out of Wyotech when it's time to leave because I will be there for a long time. This is my life and I take it seriously. I am not going to be an accountant in my life I am going to be a fabricator. I am going to put my best into it man. I will not settle for less. I am going to do great in Wyotech I know I will. I just want something nice to drive to school in. I don't want an unreliable 8,000 horse drag car but a 4 door '60's Nova with an inline 6 would be nice. I visited Wyotech in September '09 and kids had lots of old cars.

  7. The ***le said College Cars. I stated in the intro I wanted to know about reliable cars. I am grown up you dont see me going around on here telling people to f*** off. I take everything to heart and I will consider what everyone has said. I am just shooting the **** about cars who knows maybe I will get a Toyota I can't predict the future but I can dream about it.

mitchell, i don't see any problem with what you want. (at least you have an idea) the problem some are having is they think you are not prioritizing your education. you seem to have a plan for getting to cl*** on time by carpooling with other students. you seem to be focused on your future career and that is odd in most 18 y.o. people. it seems to me you are just looking for leads on a good car with some investment potential, right? i think there are many people here that can and will help. the future is uncertain for all of us so do what you can but keep in mind the future might just happen, so be prepared. again good luck.

  10. Hmm maybe will go this route after all. You have a 305 TBI in yours?

I think that all these guys have your best interest in mind. I was right there with you at that age, and I still wish I could be driving an old car every day. It just blows when you're working on your daily more than driving it.

  13. Education comes first with me. I just was shooting the **** about what cars you guys think I should buy. I am never late to cl***, never have not studied for a test, I am the perfect student I don't see why people think I don't have my priorities straight. People come on the internet and read a post by someone and think they know the person. Only a few of you on here have met me in real life other than that none of you know me. I have been told by everyone I know I am the most proactive teenager ever.

i would say get something newer and cheap for school and then once you are done get an older car...with these cars there is always something that needs to be fixed... its a love hate relationship... any old car you buy on a budget and want to drive it every day will need lots of att

  15. I have started many Wyotech threads on here. I asked about everyone on here what they thought of the school. Then I went to visit it and liked it. I took the test and got in. Sorry if I labled this thread wrong I should have just asked what are reliable cars. My bad..

  16. I know what you mean. I had a done up third generation Camaro and had to sell it and drive my parents Isuzu to school. That is why I asked for reliable cars so i wouldn;t have the same problem.

  17. Thanks.

That sums it up. It's not about being cool, it's about getting an education and I guess you don't want to hear it. I wish I hadn't wasted the time to read this thread.

  24. Hell ya!

  25. You obviously don't know me. I am the head of my school. Education is my main focus. I took a break from my history homework to ask about reliable cars. Don't click on my threads anymore then.

Before I even get to the advise, let me just tell you that I moved to Texas last year after living in Sacramento for a number of years. My last year there one of my roomates was a dude from Canada who was in the states to go to Wyotech, so I have a little perspective here.

You need to get a serious reality check. The curriculum moves very fast, and you will not have time for random breakdowns at inopportune moments. Your daily driver needs to be just that, a daily.

I don't know who told you that you can work on your car at school, but that's not really true. If you happen to have a breakdown that pertains to the particular course you are taking then *maybe* they will let you. And only if you have finished all of the units for that cl***. So yes, if you work very fast and your car breaks down only in the last couple of weeks of the course you might get to use the shop. The only thing you have a good shot at doing at school is shooting paint.

Whoever told you that the drag strip is "right next" to school is full of it. Unless by drag strip they mean the CHP training facility. I'm sure they'll invite you right on in.

You are going to be living in California. Anything after 1976 is subject to smog laws that are damn near impossible to get around without bribes and hookups. Anything before 1975 has a price premium because of this. And when you find that 75 or under car and yank it out of the yard, you may be looking at hundreds just in legal fees.

My buddy had a project that he dragged home the first week of school that he worked on in his free time. (i.e. on his schedule, not the cars) He works faster than Jesus on 20 Red Bulls and he still brought it home to Canada on a trailer. The school work is demanding. Know what he drove to school? An '89 Mazda B2000. It got him to school every day and now he works at a rod shop back home in the great white north.

Just trying to help here. Feel free to explain how you know more than I do and go back to daydreaming. :)

61-66 Ford truck or 60-66 chevy truck. They look cool, cheap to work on, etc.

    Best choices:

    Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic.
    Ford Ranger or Chevrolet S-10.

    Possible "old car" choices:

60-69 Ford Falcon with 200 six. (Or Nova equivalent.)

As reiterated numerous times above, the key requirements are low cost of ownership and the same level of reliability as an anvil.
