I have been given a bare block. It was said to be a 327 ci. The casting is 3789817 and the date code is 62. The pad is T0827D. The only reference that I have indicates that this is a 327 block for 62-64 trucks or pass. cars. I do not have a mic but the bore appears to measure less than 4. Anyone have additional info on this casting? Could it be a 283?

    this is from mortec.com

    3789817....283...62-64...2
    3789817....327...62-67...2

it could be a 283 but there is nothing wrong with that.

  3. according to Moretc , that block was used on 283s and 327s...i had no idea that was possible. a 283 has a 3-7/8" bore , you should be able to get close enough with a ruler

  4. Suffix code D can be either a 58 or a 60 283 Neither of those line up with your date code. Something ain't right. http://www.nastyz28.com is a good place for decoding Chevy stuff

    D is the suffix for a 2bbl PG 283 in 1962.

  6. Thanks Jim. Nasty Z/28 website is usually pretty accurate but not 100% and that code didn't come up for 62 on there. That block should be able to take a .125 overbore if you wanted to use it to build a 327
