Mask's - 27 roadster photo journal build

  1. I might get a lot of critisim, as im not actually building a lot of the car myself....Im a painter not a welder....i have always been more into bikes then hot rods....so theres where most of my technical knowledge comes from....i am learing a LOT during this build..i just would never drive something i welded togeather....my next car i will most likley do more myself...but building a frame and car from scratch....i have learned its not that easy..who would have thunk??

    Honestly....i got bored of bikes....

so here i am...wanting a hot rod...i live in a townhome..so my garage is small..so a 50's styled car is out, way too big ...My wife and i just had a baby this year...so money and time is tight...i figured no matter what i built..it would never be safe enough in the eyes of the law, to throw a car seat in..so this car is for me and my dog....and sometimes my wife...if my dog Lincoln doesnt want to go for a ride...

I sold my motorcycle..and my Custom Van..to free up money for the baby (and car)...the baby came..and i had money left over for the build...but what to build???

Luckly my buddy Stony from oddball kustoms came to my rescue...

Some of you know oddball kustoms as a builder of strictly high dollar builds...but since the demise of concepts....Stony kept the name of oddball, and has been focusing on smaller more realistic builds...check out the article that was just recently done on him and the new oddball kustoms.

    http://www.wheels.ca/article/782969

anyhow....we have been friends for a long time now...and i had even done some pinstriping at his shop...he had been piecing parts togeather for a while to build his own roadster...and offerd it up to me...hes happy to just see another hotrod on the road....

so my car is being build at oddball kustoms....its been a great experience so far..as i find all the parts and drop them off to stony, we keep going over the stance..the style...everything...and slowly plan it all out as the parts come in...i will keep everyone updated as it comes along....

I have pics in my album, but i will go in to details on all of them in this thread...

  2. This body was in pretty good shape..but there were usual rust spots...so stont welded in some patch panels... The turtle deck is great...but im still missing the centre panel above the trunk lid....im shocked no one makes these...its the one piece of the car..no one seems to reproduce...and its insanely hard to find...

im also missing a trunk lid...but all this stuff can be fabbed...

  3. I'm subscribing to this thread, as I will be building on the same car. Looks like a nice, solid start!

  4. A great Friend of mine Stevie had donated a 34 ford Front and and a set of rims for the build....The rims were Lime green, and i wasnt a huge fan...so i painted them..

some people arent fans of the white...but i was playing with my airbrush..and really just wanted something that wasn't green....i like them as they just look dirty from far away...but up close you can see the skulls!!

also, stony found me an s10 rear axle to use...bonus!! so it started to some more togeather.. another buddy sold me some rear tires for the build...he decided hes going in a different direction with his car..so it was a great score for me!

  5. went to a local swap meet....looking for front tires, and headlights.....

No tires......Canada sucks for tires....anything shipped across the border, we get taken for duty, taxes, shipping..and extra charges as well....so to find some locally...it pretty tough....the frame and stance couldnt be setup untill i figured what i was running on the front...

i eventually ordered some tires from a guy on ebay of all places...hes out of texas...but can drop ship from BC..so theres no duty or taxes...plus they ship by bus...saving me even more money...it took 3 weeks but i eventually for em....all for under $400 shipped...these are gona look bad ass...Firestone 6.70-15

well i got some 35 Ford headlights at the swap meet.....great condition...$100..nice and big!!

Looks like you have some nice parts going on there. The skulls are no doing it for me and it would be the first thing I change. Rattle can those fucker black!!!

    Keep us updated!

  8. haha...i was going to get them soda blasted, and repaint them a nice black...but....really...for now they just need to get the car rolling..my main goal for not, is to get the car on the road as cheap as possible...

some people love the rims..some people hate them...

eventually ill be getting something more 60's hotrod style....but for now...these will do...

    eventually i want these!!

I used to have a set of Radir wheels front and back on my '26. I ended up selling them and now I am running Chrome Steelies up front and Real Deal Ansen 5 spokes out back. The Radirs are a cool wheel for sure.

If you don't have money to throw at wheels right now another option would be one that I seen in a TRK a couple issues back with a Purple Model A pickup. He painted them a pearl silver and used stainless trim rings and chrome spider caps in the center to flash it up. The end result was awesome and one that could look cool permanently without breaking the bank.

Recommendation: try to get some skinnier wheels 6-7 out back and 4.5-5" wide up front. If nothing else try to make the front ones skinny so it does not look like they are ballooning.

    Looking good.

  11. hey JeffreyJames!
my rims and tires..15x8 on the back, with coker L78-15..29" tall
15x6 on the front, with firestone 670x15 on the front...28.5" tall

im hoping it will look ok...kind of track style..not too fat on the rears, but some meat...and the fronts are not too fat...

i really hope to end up with a 60's style hot rod..lots of polished and cast aluminum..Im using a SBC 305, so its reliable....and cheap!

  19. [IMG]its been a long x-mas holiday season..so some progress has slowed down on the car build...but....it hasnt stoped everything!!!

one small snag has been my rear rim..it has a slight bend to it about a 1/2"..so i need some spacers so it doesnt rub...i think i have located some, to push my rear wheels out an inch...but we shall see...

well..stony sent me some more pics today!!!

Cool!!!! Man the Radir wheels will look pretty rad on that thing some day and I think I know where you are going as far as direction.

Are you going keep the ass end down with this one? What color to think about in your dreams??? Pearl White?

  21. im all over the map with this one as far as colour!!! so many options!!!

...my main concern right now..is just getting it on the road....and ill worry about paint in a year or two...Pearl white would be pretty sweet though!
im kind of leaning towards the Hot Rod Flatz Champagne Gold Metallic

i also need to start collecting some dress up pieces..like valve covers, and the usual stuff...

  22. That's the same issue for most of us John...lol....best of luck with the 27......looks like your on the right path brother.

  23. Model T Haven came through....and i recieved my rear centre panel for the turtle deck, as well as my dashboard...

one thing shocking..is the centre panel rear turtle deck....why does no one remake these things? i watched one go on ebay for $344+shipping..WTF??? someone should start making these....

today i should get my package from Speedway, that includes a windshield, and headers..and on saterday, im getting some wheel spacers from a buddy...

    anyhow...

Great looking dog, and a nice looking build in progress, unusual wheel treatment, I like it when "you dare to be different" the other sheep will be ok as they follow the path!! ~Sololobo~

  25. thanks Sololobo!! i figured the car is old and rusty, and will be that way for a while...so brand new shinny wheels would look funny..in my opinion...so now..they are clean..but from a distance..they just look dirty...once i clean up the whitewalls too..they will sparkle...once i figure out the colour sceme...ill worry about the wheels...

im building the roadster so i can bring the dog with me more often....he never really fit on my motorcycle...

Great job so far. Looking at your car makes me want to go work on my 27 roadster. Thank god that I already have the upper panel on my turtle deck. 344 is too steep for me!

  29. well.....its out of the shop....ready to come home....

still tons of work to do..but at least its a roller now!
