Can you ruin a pump in a 700R4 by trial mount without converter?

Back in July I mounted my 700R4 to my 350 without a flexplate or converter to use for a mockup in making front and back motor mounts and now I'm told that I probably ruint the pump on the tranny. How could this happen and how would I know? I had the 700 checked before I got it home and now it looks like I'll have to come up with another 125 for a recheck.
Anyone have any info on this?. Am I screwed?
    Thanks

No way unless you hit the shaft on something.

Is the guy wanting the 125 telling you it needs re-checked??? Sometimes ya gotta question someone's motivations when they got their hand on your wallet.

only thing i could see is if it filled with debris or moisture
and or you hit the input shaft
but that would have to be a hell of a hit

No, it's not the guy that did the check. It's another car builder that's familiar with Chevy transmissions and I'm worried that he may have a point. That's why I came here, there's a lot of 700 post so I'm hoping to hear someone say" It can't happen with no flexplate" or something similar.
    Thanks

    Bullshit. No way.

Relax and continue with your build,,, find another transmission shop.

  9. What difference is it if it's bolted up or sitting on the floor of the shop? The front shaft isn't normally touching anything either way. If anything it's probably better on the car, that way it's harder for the cat to piss on the front of it.

How in the hell could it happen there is 4 or more inches between the block and the pump. you could even run the motor if you could start it w/o a fly wheel. I call BULL SHIT

wait. how do you know you have a problem with the tranny? Have you installed it? When installing the converter you should make sure that the converter has engaged on to the pump gears and then you should have an 1/8 to 3/16 clearance between the converter and flex plate before you bolt it up.

BS! With flexplate without flexplate it doesn't matter. Without the converter
in place there is at least a 1/2" between the input shaft and the crank.
No way to F it up mocking it up like that. I'd ask him to explain just how
this is gonna screw it up,then just shake my head and walk away.

Okay, I feel a lot better from listening to you people. I had a good day and got some parts made but the email about the pump took the joy out of it. A good fabrication video will get me back on track.
I'm going to go with the 700 like it sits. Tomorrow I will mount the flexplate and converter as the motor goes in permanent this time. Well, almost permanent, until its paint time.
    Thanks

No need to do anything to it if it has not been bolted to a flexplate and the engine started.

To add to this information ...

NO ... you cannot damage the pump simply by bolting the transmission to the block ( even with the flexplate attached ) ... BUT ... I have seen the front pump seal damaged over time by the converter being in the transmission and not supported. IF ... the converter was not installed during mock up ... I see no possibility of damage to the pump without hitting it ... ;)

I think you need to insert "pinewood derby" in front of "car builder" in the quote above.

no way could that happen think about it all you did was bolt the tranny to the engine and thats it.... i think the only way you can mess a pump up with out starting it is boltig the engine and trans with the flex plate and TQ and not have the TQ seated in the pump... when you tighten the engin and trans up it will break he ears off the pump....your fine...

x125, all he's looking to do is give you 125 more reasons to find another shop.

  23. IMPORTANT!!! you must have the kick down cable installed and adjusted correctly befor you go for a ride.

  24. make sure to get the converter in all the way in, if not when you bolt it up good chance you will break off the drive tangs on the pump gear. you should not be able to get your fingers between the converter and the pump when checking from the pan side.

  25. I think this is a case of an "Expert" who doesn't know Shit from Shinola!!
