A local guy expressed an interest in buying an early ford body. I am slowly coming to the realization that I have collected too much junk to ever build in my lifetime. I offered him my '31 Vicky body for $6500. I have about 170 hours into the metal work. It is a real Vicky from the B pillars back. The floor pan, doors and cowl are slantwindshield fordor (with modifications). I've used fordor body lines reversed side for side to make it a steel back Vicky. It'll still need another 200 hours to be right ... in my opinion. This is NOT a fishing expedition to see if I can hammer down a Barrett-Jackson price.... I'd like opinions as to whether you feel this is a real world price..... fair for the buyer, fair for the seller ( I guess it must be if I opened my yap).... based on current economy etc. The body as it sat this afternoon.... Small amount of finishing needed on roof. My plan was to fill the opening.... Cowl.... Slantwindshield Fordor doors stretched 6 1/4" to fit Vicky.....
A local dealer here sold a near-perfect '31 Tudor body (only the body) for 5K about 4 years ago. He's sold a couple more real nice '30-'31 Tudor bodies in the 4-5K range since. Your's is "made" but it's made of real Ford steel. For someone wanting one, I don't see why it wouldn't be worth $6500. Where else you gonna find one? JH
I LOVE 30-32 Ford Vickies, so I may be biased. That is the way to sell one IMO, naked, every feature is in plain view. Nice welds, TIG or Gas? Your price sounds fair to me. I think the originals had wood sub floors correct? If so the steel Fordor sheetmetal is a big upgrade. Now I'll go back and read the other replies.
sounds about right its a really nice solid body, some local guy around here is selling a complete 31 vic for 8k
oh ya, remember its a fair price...but the buyer is always looking for a deal and will probably haggle the price. but its really up to you, i honestly think its a fair price, but if i were to buy it...i would offer 4500 for the body...(i am kinda cheap)
Stick to your price. It's more than fair considering the junk that's out there. Another thing, where is he going to find another one if he is focused on finding a Vicky? Frank
I don't know what it's worth but I'd love to have it, for sure. It's the perfect hot rod starting point.
If the buyer is looking for "an early Ford Body" he probably isn't the guy you're going to sell your car to. Vicky's are becoming pretty rare and even though yours is not the real deal it certainly is pretty close and I believe would be a great starting point for somebody that really loves that body style. The guy who is searching for this will be more likely to step up to your reasonable price of $6500. I'd advertise it and stay firm on the price. Terry
I'm always amazed at the way the car companies destroyed there stamping molds when finished with them. If a guy had all the molds, and some huge presses...Oh well...
I am either out of touch, cheap or just broke....probably all three. You don't see many vickys...granted. But that seems like alot of money to me for a bare model A body. That is roughly the money that I have seen older resto, running & driving model A tudors listed around here lately. I know, I know - it is a vicky.... I hope you get it, though!
your price is OK. i recently found a turnkey driving gl*** vicky, with latemodel drivetrain(ford&5speed),heidts front end. gelcoat .no paint, frnt seat but unfin interior. for $16,000. way i see things u can't put what u have on a frame with a drive train including brakes,gl***,tires&wheels, for another $10,000. to me the gl*** car is a MUCH better bargain. ur body may be worth $6500 but i don't think it is a bargain. i would not invest that much in what u have. if u did all that work thinking to make aprofit or even break even its hard to do. someone wanting a project to get to the B.J. auction may disagree with me. i had rather have a metal car but most gl*** cars done correct bring about the same money in the street rod scene. jmo. The car is at home, I'm at work..... but if my memory is working the doors are flush fit, because that's the way they were from the factory. To answer an earlier question, the floor is all steel from the slantwindshield fordor. Thank you for all the considered responses. The guy who is interested has an early hemi at the machine shop. Should be a cool build if it goes ahead.
Yes, the doors on 30/32 Vics, Briggs and Murray, were flush fit. I paid $600 for complete cloth back in 1975. That wa a lot of bucks then. Haven't seen a 30/31 whole in the condition of this for anywhere down around or near $6500 lately. Definitely worth $6500. Charlie
I know your work is good, so this is a good deal on this car. At 170 hours that is $38 per hour without the cost of the early ford tin. If he buys any A body and pays someone to get it to that condition he will be into it for way more money.
Well if he's not willing to go there, I am. That's a clean body and all steel. It would be difficult to put one together for any less. Craig
TINMAN...WELL it all depends on the buyer. 1 man's trash is another mans treasuer! and i mean that in a nice way...POP.
