A small record store I worked at for a time while I was in my early 20's recently closed. It made me think of this picture and maybee a few HAMBers might like to see it. I got it formated to size thanks to Plan9. Social Distortion came in to drop off some promo stuff('91 I think) with their manager, and he took this photo. They were my favorite band next to the Clash. I had seen gone to see them many times with my older brother. They were all real cool and liked my car alot. Their manager later sent me this photo. Made me feel real big. I got the car when I was 15(now 34). My dad went in halfs with me on it. When I paid him off, he gave me his half as well. At the time it was basically a "bolt on" custom but it was alot of fun. I drove it everywhere, even doing my lawn route out of the trunck. A buddy and I did the body work and paint out of his folks garage. We painted it late on summer night, and most of the bugs color sanded out. I wanted it to look like Jim Ashleys '57 Hot Rod cover car, real mild It later got the usual shaving, tuck and roll, Winfield louvers, and some real Appelton spots(a Christmas gift from my Dad). It is now black lacquer and has not been out in a long time. Larry Watson says he will add his touch it if I ever get it back on the road. Thanks for your time, Dirk
they probably spent as much time in front of your car as thay did at the show i saw them at a month ago- 45 minute set, 15 minute encore- goodbye. $30 for the most rehearsed show ever- the band is all dead now
Dirk thats a cool pic and a very nice car. Does anyone remember the documentary called "Another State of Mind" anyway it was about Social D when they were kids trying to get the band going. Dirk's story made me think of this.
Yep I have it. Didn't show them all in a very favorable light. Just kids still I guess. Cool car. Nice memory too.
That documentary was exellant! When they went to DC and the bus /van broke down and they stayed with Minor Threat(another great band) at the straight edge house. cool, haven't seen it since it was on MTV years ago!
cool pic other than the color, your 55 looks just like Ashleys 55 some chick took a pic of me standing with mike ness doing the cholo hand shake picture pose after a concert about that time. i cruised by her house to pic up the devolped pic and she wanted 15 bucks for it,i told her to keep it...
Havent seen the documentary, but I would like to.They have been one of my favorite bands for a long time.(even before I knew of our common car appreciation)Verry cool pic!Take care of it.
Dirk- Do you still have those tailights or know where to get a set?? I see those in alot of li'mags but never seen them in person..Dirty
I still have them Dirty Rat. They are old Lee Plastics, kinda gaudy. I got them at the Pomona swap over Ten years ago.
Butt, I was hoping that you were going to say that she made you "work" it off. Too bad. Here goes my favorite Mike Ness Pic, before he was so "punk rock" or whatever you want to call him. I can imagine him driving an old Duster in this picture....Like the "Hemi" guys on TV.
I remember dennis dannell passed away when I was in high school and I wore this patch on my back pack that said r.i.p. dennis dannell and no one knew who he was, not even the "punk" kids at school, made me sad, he was a great guitarist. Social distortion is a great band, I don't give a shit what anyone else says. That is one sick 55!
ok now i feel old....dennis passed away when you were in high school .... man i dont even want to tell how long i had been out of high school when he died ........ and the '' punk kids probably think blink 182 and sum 41 are punk bands...that why they didnt know who he was........ask em if they new who darby crash was.....i bet not ...haha...cool pic....
Kustom 55- Do you have anymore pics?.. The 55 is a pretty slick ride and Mike Ness rocks..So hate me!..
Thanks for all the comments about my car and the picture, they mean alot! Dennis said he had a 59 Chevy, an Impala I think. Hope he got to enjoy it before he passed.
Dennis had a 59 El Camino...the owner lives in Huntington, Chris had a 59 Impala, John now has Ness' old 60 Impala...just FYI
