Projects Cast aluminum valve cover wing nuts? Reproduced?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by BIGREDTODD, Jan 22, 2010.

  1. Hey guys, just wondering if anyone has a source for the cast aluminum wing nuts like the ones below...want to use them on my Y-block, but can never seem to win the Egay auction...are these reproduced by chance?

    Anyone hoarding a huge supply?

Do they have to look EXACTLY like the ones you showed? I have some with splined shafts and some that the wings are permanant on the shafts. The studs weren't long enough to make it through my M/Ts.

  3. They need to be like the ones above...I have seen several auctions over the last year, even a few on the HAMB, but I am always too late or get outbid...

The Y-Block has studs, so threaded nuts are a must. I have acorns now, but I like the way these look, and with adjustable rockers they are just handy, too!

I'm interested too for some vette covers,

at worst you might be able to machine the shafts shorter on some normal ones

  8. Check machine shop suppliers, used for fixtures & such,,

Those splined Mr. Gasket type valve cover bolts ****. The winged tips won't stay on unless you use silicone or something and the splines strip out the first time you try to tighten them.

  10. Sad to say that in my opinion most of the stuff Mr Garbage sells is ****. Cheap Chinese parts that don't cut it and the chrome falls off after a very short time. I don't think you could get away with converting the splined type to screw on since the hole is already too big. Possible you could size them down with helicoils but the last ones I saw were made of potmetal and might not hold up to repeated use.

I think I've still got a couple of Cal Custom sets of these things laying in the bottom of the same box I threw them in over 30 years ago because I got tired of them barely threading into the heads when I tried to use them with a set of rocker covers having thick flanges. I can say the tops never had a problem with coming off the splines and would seat so firmly they were actually difficult to pull off.

I replaced them with hex head bolts slightly taller than the rocker cover itself. It was easy to use nuts and washers for tightening after the threaded portion of the bolt bottomed in the holes like a stud. This didn't look as "cool" as the Cal Custom ones, but I was doing a lot of street racing at the time and could have cared less. The long bolt thing actually worked so well at keeping the rocker covers on and the oil in the engine that I started doing it with all my rocker covers. As I would take them off, the Cal Custom wing nut sets all were thrown in that same box. Today a lot of us wouldn't think twice about flycutting a relief to reduce flange thickness for enough thread purchase in the rocker cover.

What goes around comes around as they say and these certainly could help a motor give off a "traditional" vibe.

I filled and taped mine and ran a long stud down to carbs, now I don't have to reach threw opening of blower scoop to take the scoop off.........plus it keeps my bug screen on and now matches the valve cover hold downs!

They used to be pretty popular for Y block Ford valve covers. They look great on the T-Bird valve covers. The Y block is seeing a resurgence so there might be a pretty good market. You could make them with different thread sizes for different applications.

I had the same issues trying to win a set for my Y Block on ebay. After about three of four auctions I finally won a set. Funny thing was that they were all being sold by the same guy, that is the same pic he used for all of the auctions.

Eelco has them plain, not chromed or polished, in packs of four.
Some alliance vendors should have them.

Do you happen to know what the thread size is for the y block ones? were most of them chrome, or polished? Would you be able to give me some basic dimensions for them?

    Thanks, Jim
