The number would be stamped on the pad on the front of the right cylinder bank. The suffix letters are what determines what the engine was and in originally if it hasn't been machined off.

The block is 4 inch" bore and with a stock bore would be a 302, 327 or 350 depending on which crank you put in it.

If he went to a size like the 337 or 338 he would have to have bored the
    block oversize.

Depending on what crank, rods and pistons you run you can build about what ever you want out of it based on the 4 inch bore but as other mentioned if it is indeed a true 68/69 big journal 302 block that can be do***ented some **** Z28 owner may give big bucks for it. Otherwise it is one hell of a nice base for a good running hotrod engine.

By poking around this site along with about 500 others you should be able to decode the block. http://www.chevy-camaro.com/faq/chevy-camaro-faq-Z28.shtm

Seems you should already know from your first post,,Z-28 Motor.

If that was the case every running small block chevy for sale would be a freshly rebuilt four bolt main with 2.02 heads and a rv cam. Thats why I turn to you guys for the right answer..Thanks

my brother(is a 69 camracer collector.) 67 and early 68's were small journels. and i thought that in 69 the dz was stamped in the flywheel valley(not 100% sure) as for money, well if a camracer wants it and it is a 302 a few k's .(they arnt that smart--expec--my bro.)

If the casting number on the crank is 3941178 it"s big journal 302.Check the flywheel flange if it"s round like a 283 but has a L shaped notch out of it. IT"S a 302 but very unlikely.....

Its not the early 302 block, in 67 they only made 602 Z28's. They used yours for several different engines, It would be a good block to use. I guess it also has the 010 High nickle mark on it as well? Id run it.

  11. 69 350 300HP 4bbl carb. That casting number wasn't used in 65 and 4 bolt mains weren't either. On 69 blocks the VIN number will be stamped in the rough casting vertically on the flat surface just behind where the oil filter screws on. Right next to where the bellhousing would be. Very hard to see sometimes since it's on a rough area rather than the smooth machined area on the deck where you found the HE code. The letter preceding the last 6 numbers of the partial VIN will tell you what model car it came from. The number before the letter will tell the year. For example 9N234567 is a 69 engine from a Camaro built in Norwood. A 69 4 bolt main 4" bore block is still worth a few bucks to a numbers guy. It's the first year of 4 bolt main blocks and Corvette guys as well as Camaro guys are willing to pay decent bucks for them.

I love garage sales, around here there are always car parts and tools. You just have to get there early! I saw a 2 ton cherry picker for $80, but I was broke as a joke at the time.
