I just took mine to machine shop to get cam bearing put in ,
Makes me kinda happy since it wasn't a fresh full rebuild . The machne shop guy is real familier with FE's and thought it might be a 428 because I have the big port heads , so even if it's a 390 like it's supposed to be atleast I have real good heads on it : ))

Ok guys, don't beat me up here, I'm a chevy guy myself, but have been known to build a few fords for close friends. I tend to build things in ways others wouldn't consider, but the results always speak for themselves. I'm currently working on a 64 galaxie for a friend, who wants to build a sleeper hot rod(think 60's moonshine runner). Car will be flat black, 390 powered, auto(guy has bad knees can't work the clutch), etc. What I'm wondering, (390merc, old tin, movin/on) what would be a reasonable hp for a mild built 390? It will be a three duece set-up, and we are running the 427 cast iron headers that are factory 427 galaxie parts, because he has these parts already. I'm thinking it'll be about 430-450hp. What do you FE guys think? I told him I'd rather use the dual quad intake he has for it, as the three duece set-up will not make as much power, but he is set on the three duece's and thats that! It is his ride, and he is the customer, so I'll build what he wants. What do you think guys? Is 430-450hp a reasonable thought? I'm well aware that I'll have to work on the heads quite a bit or maybe go aluminum, but I think I'm probably close. What do the 390's with 3 dueces you guys have make for power? Any advice is appreciated as well. Thanks guys, Al. By the way, they are somewhat pricey...so that FE F&*#ing Expensive comment wasn't far off!!

The FE was first introduced in '58.
The FE blocks consist of 352s,360s,390s,427s,429s, etc..
If I remember they became an option in Mustangs in '68.
They were put in many cars & trucks, and were stop being put in F-Sieries Ford Trucks in '76.
    ------------------------------------------------------
Although my truck orginally came with a 390 FE, someone swaped it out with another 390 that had a automatic, cause my truck is a 4-speed...(And no I'm not running any smog stuff.)

    ...FE's were introduced in 1958 as a 332.

    352, 353 hipo, 390, 390 hipo, 406, 427, 428 are also FE's. the 429 is a "385 series" motor along with the 460.

I'm no FE expert by any means, I'm an Olds guy but I've learned to have to do my homeowrk with Olds so it was just a matter of where to look and who to ask on these FE's .
your HP figures should be easy with proper cam . The Edelbrock heads are supposed to be a worth wild bolt on piece if you have the coin, but your numbers can be doen easy with the right stock head , maybe a little massaging.
I have a few intakes including a 3 duece so it's been on my mind during my build.
I'm useing the Lunait Voodoo cam 62003lk which should fall into your power numbers as thats about where I hoped to be . I also bought these thinking I may open them up for easier breathing http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...0409125420&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK:MEWNX:IT
I have some extra finned valve covers and roller rockers if you need

I am putting a 427 with dual quads in a '32 Ford pickup too. I figure it will give it a mid sixties Hot Rod flare with a wide and tall motor appearance and it will be All-Ford. Mine is going to be choped 4", channeled and fenderless. I am going for the 60's drag look.

My buddie is doing a Model A coupe with a '57 T-Bird E-code dual quad 312 Y-Block motor. His ought to look like it was built in '57 with a wrecked Bird motor.

1958 was the first year, but the available engine sizes were 332, 352 and, for the popo, a 361.

I laughed my ass off with that boat anchor comment since the engine in these pics was actually pulled from the hull of a boat!! lol It's a 1968 date coded 427 side oiler. It's been completely rebuilt with 1970 Cobrajet heads, solid lifters, Lemans rods, factory windage tray, factory adjustable rockers from the boat (lol), aluminum water pump and factory Ford 2X4 intake, good cam and springs, finned aluminum Cobra oil pan, FPA ceramic headers and backed by a 68 Shelby big spline RUG-R 4spd. Check out the cool vintage mallory "crab" dist. cap so it will clear the Cobra Intake. Oh, and this engine is where I get my screen name. Oh, and yes, that old boat anchor is also pushing factory A/C and power steering, lol.

What about the 360 FE? And a 410 (which I think is a 360 with a 428 crank)? How do those motors "fit in" with the rest of the FE family of motors? Are they odd balls?

Here we are dropping a 390 in the 58 TBird.... and we have a few FEs

    I still have the 352 the 58 came with, along with a 59 tBird with not sure what motor, a 60 Tbird with a 352, a 64 Tbird with a 390, two 65 TBirds with 390s

and I have this intake that I plan to run someday

which brings up a question I have had..... how hard to switch from a SBC motor to a FE? I have a 29 5 window that I think would be cool to run an FE in, thinking a 352 with that tri power intake?

Use a 300hp 390 in my 1ton 70 car hauler. Use it to haul broke dick chebbies back to their homes. Pulled a K5 blazer on back and another K5 on a trailer behind down I95 at 70mph still had more gas pedal. It has a watson remote overdrive in it and clocked it at a 100mph and climbing.

I'm interested in this, too, since I'm considering an FE for my Model A on Deuce rails. I'm curious how much of a wheelbase stretch I need and/or how much I'll need to clearance the firewall.
