Hi guys. This board seems like the most "in the know" for this type of question so I thought I'd drop in :D

    Anyways, here is my inquiry.

Most Mickey Thompson SBC valve covers I see look like this:

My set has a backwards slash, and looks like this:

Is there any rhyme or reason as to why they are different? Does this give a clue as to original casting date or anything?

    Thanks.

Probably made that way by an off shore (China) Co. to get around copy and mfg. rights.:D

  3. Well hell.. Now I gotta go out to the barn & check my 4 sets and see if I have any of them ultra rare Chinese ones..

I always wondered why they put that big flat band under the M/T?
Maybe to engrave something? I think they would look better without the band and the 2 knockouts per cover.

I think your right about the engraving. I "lived" :) through the era when these were new and it was popular to take your MT covers to an engraver and have the name of your car or engine builder put on them.

I had a pair back in the "day" also and after I bought them, they just looked to busy for my taste. They were raw aluminum with no paint, but just seemed to draw your eyes to them instead of the motor...

Your set was obviously made after the internet was created. Gary

Now I'm gonna have to dig out my stack and see what I got.

PS My Brother asked me one time if I'd ever seen some T/M valve covers. We figured out the picture he was looking at had the negative reversed. :) I gave him hell about it, of course.

I have few sets to check. What is the engineering number on the inside of the cover(s)? Is there a recess under the flat pad or is it completely flat on the underside?

Here's a good example, the big block M/T's look alot better than the small block ones.

Not really helping with the answer, but I have a set for sbc that do not have the 2 knockouts on it, just the M/T the flat space and fins. they say thompson 327 on the back.

Also have seen them with just fins too.

The big block version does look killer.

Where were most of these made? I'm pretty sure I have a pair that are all fins and M/T and the staggered bolt pattern and say Japan underneath. Like I said, I'll be checking my stack when I get off work. :)

The ones I posted say 396-427 (pre 1970) made in japan on the inside but I have another set that just have a part number which are newer. I'm actualy going to run one from each set so I have a pair with only one hole per cover.

What you got there is a set of extremely rare Murray Tannenbaum valve covers! Cast in the ba*****t of his father's jewelry store using a lost wax process. ;)

See, here I was thinking that mine were the Mickey Thompson "DOS" version while all the others are the "UNIX" type.

    **** humor at is finest.

I'll check underneath when I get home. Thanks guys.

There is a recess. Says "140R-50B" underneath. Nothing else.

Damn ! must be a pretty good size cruicable and centerfugal , burning the wax out in the microwave saves a lot of time and reduces need for exhaust fan .

Tjet - that ad must be from around '67 or '68. There's no mention made of the Olds 455 or Pontiac 455 in it. Yet it lists Firebird and Camaro. I'm pretty sure the 425 Olds was only made 2 years; '66 & '67. Too bad it doesn't show those m***ive Hemi ones! Your set looks great, I'd love to have a pair for my 425.

Wow, maybe those backward slashes are some mis-castings like a mis-printed postage stamp or a mis-struck coin. You've found your fortune!
