To a great extent, where we came from was not only the dry lakes, but the dragstrips as well. Here's a site featuring many drag racing roadsters. Interesting part is, most of these roadsters look like you could put mufflers on them and hit the drive-in on a Saturday night. Course, you probably shouldn't . . . with the serious engines these things ran, you'd probably scare hell out of the owners with stock engines running gear drives and other faky stuff.... Go here for roadster pics
Here's a pic of my favorite. It says roadster and fast and good looking all at the same time. Interesting to note that the better builders of the era were also the guys who had the eye. Perhaps it could be attributed to the form follows function bit. Even so, I think there's more to it than that. A desire to have a good looking end product for sure, but it's the art, form and even light that's coming out here. Most car builders probably wouldn't admit to it, but there are artists who dabble in paint and artists who dabble in steel. Steel art . . . what a concept. It's been going on for a long time. Witness some of the one-offs from the factories as well as some of the stuff from the one man shop. Would it be that we could all be such artists, but for those of us who are not, copying is not such a bad thing....
Really neat pix!! I recognized a lot of them from seeing them in the magazines back in the day. thanks lots for sharing!!
Thanks for posting the link, great cars, good to know that a few of them are still around or under restoration.
C9, here's another photo of that same car lined up. It was owned by Ed Losinski. Had a flathead with Sharp intake and manifold and a Harmon & Collins magneto. A "39 box with Zephyr gears too
Damn Jay, you've found the motherload! Anyone know what those rear wheels are that "Los ******s" used?
hope no one minds this not being a roadster pic but going though some photos I found this one, kinda sums it up for me
And the first picture has that Gremlin rear quarter window Boyd just invented... Blue Bear was right about that one. It was ugly back then and it still is today...
Grimlocks modified sure reminds of these two little gems. I can see similarities. (thats a good thing)
this is one of the best posts I have ever opened. I cant not belive how cool all those pics are. I have seen so many I would love to build in a similar fashion. That spagetti benders coupe is wild, so is that one on a trailer. yes, I did say a trailer so what it rocks. There are just too many, I couldnt get up from desk after viewing all those. Thats for both links to the roadsters and coupes..
Pretty cool stuff, in the roadster pics the second car down is the first car I ever drove, I was about 6 years old, that is the **** Kraft/Highland Plating Special car. It had the blown flathead in it when I drove it. To bad my father sold it in the 80's, he bought it in CA in 1974 and drove it back to Jersey, I would love to have that car back but for some reason I don't seem to have over six figures in my pocket.
