On my 40 Ford frame the X member has rusted away at the bottom where it sits inside the outer frame rail. Could I box these areas and do away with this part of the X member? Or would I be screwing up by doing this. I am in the process of making a jig for the frame before I do anything. Thanks Mike.

I second the motion. There are many places to buy either complete frames or just rails. I had to make up new parts for my center section. Turned out nice and is strong.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I was somewhere that sells rails for $500. The front and rear crossmembers are probably the best parts on this frame.
