I bought a project car in KY with a "bill of sale".

Is it possible to get a KY title with just a BOS?...the seller will get one IF it can be done. Or can I, a non-resident, get a title with a BOS?

Is there any provision in KY law that allows a "bonded title" or something similar?

    thanks.

you'd need to apply for a ky vin number....which you would fill out ...and include a notorized affidavid from the seller....stating why it doesn't have a title...(so they can check for stolen vehicles...) ..and that he's owned it for atleast i think 5years.....once you recieve the ky vin from your local ky courthouse...you have to attach said vin tag on the car and get it inspected....and resubmit a vtr with your application .....sometimes it works easy ....sometimes.......well ...i'll just say it can be a pain .......of course this is for a person who's a resident of ky ......not sure on the bonded title deal......brandon

Ky is a real pain in the ass when it comes to titles. They want the owner(title holder)not the car holder to transfer the car.bill of sales doesn't work AT ALL in the state of Ky.you have to have the active title and the guy that the title's name is in if you do it at a Ky DMV. If you don't have a good title you are screwed here.most of the time they will tell you if the title is active and not junked . if it's been junked ,it's out of the DMV system and you will have to get a builers title.Ky DMV will not even tell you who the title's name is in.here in Ky we pay tax's every year on our stuff so if it's been sitting around, people junk the title so they don't have to pay the taxes on them at the first of the year.I am a notary public here in Ky I've tried myself to get around the laws.most of the time the only option they will give you on something like that is to do a builders title and with all the crap they want you to go thru it's not worth it.what I would do is just go with a title company.PM me if you need a title company # I have used them and have had great results.about $150.00

  4. I went thru a butch of B.S. when I bought my other 58 chevy wagon. It came from alabama and only had a b.o.s.I had to have a dealership to get a title because they wouldn't issue me one.Ky sucks on this sorta stuff and car taxes

one the last car that i did the ky vin number deal on ...i was asking the lady at frankfort about the bill of sale deal ....and she told me that there were curtain states that they wouldn't except......heck i sold a model a coupe last fall that had a clear ohio title and they still made the new owner do the ky vin deal.....ended up taking him probably 2 months to get it thru ....and there was nothing wrong with it.....as for the ky tax on old cars.......get historic plates....the only way to fly ......even on a daily driver.....brandon

I am in the middle of getting a title on my 32. I got the vin number from the state with a bunch of notarized reciepts. Now I am waiting to get the inspection before I can apply for a new title. So far so good.

  7. I get historic tags no matter what,it is a heck of a lot cheaper

I didn't have squat for my RPU, no bill of sale, no legible vin, nothing.

After some discussions with the county clerk, I applied
    for a "lost" title.

I submitted a notorized document stating that I had owned the vehicle for 10 years (KY registration records only go back seven years) with the VIN number (my daughters birthdays on a new body tag on the firewall) to the clerk.

A deputy came out to inspect the VIN, and I received a new 28 ford title in the mail the following week.

    Your mileage my vary..... :)

    The Rodster:
That is the way to go.

I want to add, on a "out of state" title in my KY county, I got into the "actual mileage form" problem on a NY title for my 36 pu. No shit, my odometer had 7 miles when the Deputy checked and the clerk wanted a signed notarized paper from the original owner that the mileage was correct. The title was last used in 1955. Now you and I (and he)can see that might be a little hard to do. It was an issue that was hard to get around here. I have heard of other Ky counties that do a "odometer is incorrect" form and went on without problems. It didn't work here.

    I went to title/register my 49 GMC without a speedometer/odometer.

They looked at me like I was an alien!

They said it couldn't be done.

I said that I have done it twice before, just run the damn paperwork.

    It worked.

  20. FWIW, NY does not use titles on HAMB cars. It's a registration - only - and all it ever was. You take a big chance using an old one to register a car because you got a new paper copy of that thing every year. If a guy chucked the old ones in a drawer there could be 10, 20, 30 of them with the same VIN on them. Meaning when someone sells them there could be a dozen cars in a dozen states all running the same VIN because people didn't do things the right way, or at least in a way somewhat less obvious.

IMHO the Bronco guy should find somebody out of state he can sell to where they're not so fussy, then buy it back and see if that will fly.

Whenever I need a signature of a previous owner, he is always available in the parking lot.

    Weird.
