Home Made Mufflers

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by billandlori, Jan 30, 2010.

  1. I saw on Muscle Car this morning about making your own gl*** packs.

Has any one else made their own muffs? Gl*** Pack, Chambered, Turbo, Etc????

How did they sound when you were done? Were you happy with them?

I made a pair for my 56 New Yorker, chambered I guess you'd call them. I took a straight length of 2.5 inch exhaust pipe, drove a couple of engine core plugs (frost plugs) to the center, then drilled about 60 holes around the cir***ference and along the length of the pipe. Slid the smaller pipe into a length of 4-inch pipe, and sealed both ends with 18-gauge discs, 4-inch diameter, that the smaller pipe slid through. They sound great! I got pics somewhere I'll post later.....

I remember the HAMB's late "C9" (Jay Carnine) posting about how a friend of his had made "coffin" mufflers that sounded really nice. So nice in fact that the guy started to build them to order!
I don't see any problem with the construction part...just that until they get built and tested you have no way to know how they will really sound.
I've thought about making some long gl***packs as I used to like the sound of my old Mustang thru long outsider mufflers, but really...IF I did decide to do it, it's just easier to weld two regular bullets into a tube and be done with it!

  4. A buddy of mine made some FlowMaster type for an old mopar drag car that he ran on the street. They sounded real good, a bit tinny - just like the real thing!!

You can buy gl***pack blanks in varying sizes at most muffler shops.

we use to make boom sticks for our race cars , But why try to make a normal muffler? they are to cheap in price to go through the trouble to make them , unless they are being seen I would just buy aftermarket mufflers of your choice, if your gonna hand make something make something that can be shown off

Funny you should mention makin your own muffs. Thought of doing it many times but never did. It's fun making your own stuff. But, muffs you buy are fairly cheap and been tested already so that's the draw back. Spending countless hours making something over and over again to get the sound you want, only to throw them on the pile with the others that didn't sound good in the end anyway. But it's not the first time i've done that. Gotta give it a shot someday.

5lb roll of steel wool, some sheet metal and a sheet metal roller: easy as pie. actually, a lot easier than pie (crust is pretty difficult).
punch/perforate/drill the exhaust tube, wrap steel wool around it, roll some sheetmetal, a bit of welding, done.
I've made my own on more than a few occasions, usually all stainless, back when sainless gl***packs (err, metalpacks, i guess) were too damned expensive.

now my hearing is shot enough that open pipes aren't too loud, so that's what i run :)
