My dad raced his street car there until he joined the air force in 1966. He was in the air force until 2000 and his office on the base was right near the starting line.

 

Thanks Ken for the kool pic's......great old track brother......I was at the 96 reunion and had a blast hanging out with Big Daddy and the Farmer.....too bad they never kept the reunion going.

 

They have a "Niagara Reunion" Race every year at Dunn Tire in Lancaster, NY.
(The old Lancaster Dragway) Usualy end of July Beginning of August, See ya there.

 

.....WOWSER !!!! what a step back in time. I probably went there for the first time in 65, not every week, but a bunch. I'm amazed at all the top national racers that were there, those pics really jogged the memory bank. The GOLD CUP NATIONALS were always a big deal, and I had forgotten about the NASCAR sanction days. I dont remember seeing a pic , but I do recall Hayden Proffit with a RamblerAMC funny car at one of the big shows, I think it even had a fuzzy/flocked body. Thanks so much for the trip down memory lane. I will be at Lancaster this summer for the gasser show, if you live in the northeast dont miss it.

..just went out to the shop..I still have a Niagara trophy from 1969 for a class win in my 63 Dodge..H/SA 361/305hp, that was the last summer of drag racin for me, roundy pounding for the next 17 years...

Thanks for posting. Went through all the pix looking for the G/Stock '58 Chevy Delray my brother and I ran at Niagara and Lancaster back in '66 - '67. No luck. You'd think we would have saved at least one photo, but no.

I was at the the reunion when it was held at the convention center.I had my pro street nova there.I got to meet Don Garlits, he walked with as he told us the stories of the old rails that were displayed there.I was just in awe , that I was talking to a pioneer of the sport.

.........thanks Ken for the FYI on Dunn tire.......I know alot of my old friends that raced at Cayuga Dragway on the Canadian side raced Niagara also......if I remember....I think the owner of Niagara Dragway back in the 60's was a silent partner in the Cayuga track for alittle while??

 

Never been there, neat old photos though.

 

My Parents would go on dates and camp up there during the mid 60's, I even think my dad ran once in his (mine now) Model A coupe. Cool post thanks

 

Thanks Ken, for posting this fantastic reminder of the "kinder, simpler" times that were the early sixties and "Suuuuuuuuuuuundaaaaaaaaaay - Niaaaaaaaaaaaaagara!" Damn, those WERE the days...

I was glad to see this photo from the old days. I think you saw it when the original builder brought it out of 45+ years storage for the show at the Nostalgic Drags / Sunday Niagara show a couple of years ago. He's the guy removing the original slicks so he could tow it home on the tow bar - just as he had donw 50-years earlier.

Finger Lakes boy here and I love that. I heard SUNDAY NIAGRA on the radio back in the day. Great memories.

Man, I wish I could have been there!!! I also wish my father was around to talk to him about it. We only talked about it a few times but it left a lasting impression on me for sure!!! I am glued to the site!!!

 

Every year there is a Niagara Drag Strip Video Reunion, last year it was on transit Road at the aud Sports bar and Grill. It was in March, don't know the date for 2010 yet. nonstop videos of the old days, and a lot of bench racing.

 

Please let us know the date if & when you get it. I would love to bring my uncles out for it. Thanks Ken

I spent most Sundays and some weekends at Niagara in the 60's! Great times. Those weren't only Canadians camping in those tents, we were in there somewhere!!
