Anyone have pictures of a stock mustang II crossmember mounted in a 1948-54 chevy pickup. Looks like the crossmember is 27 inches wide insde and the frame 28 1/4. I have widened these crossmembers in the paston other applications, but this almost looks like you could notch it that much. (Not looking to buy a kit) Thanks for the help. Mike
I think remember seeing a picture in this thread http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=259315
I know you said you did not want to buy a kit. My dad would not buy 1 either and we have installed 25 or 30 over the years always with stock mustang cross members. A man that we have did several cars for bought a 37 ford coupe and wanted it done. Dad agreed to do it but this time everything would be bought he bought a mustang kit what a piece of cake man we had it in and done in about 4 hrs compared to probably 12 hrs with stock mustang cross member plus all the cutting trimming plating you know the drill. Now I am just as big of a tightwad but sometimes you have to step back and look at what your time is worth even though its on your own stuff if you have another skill that could make you extra money with the time you save do it to pay for the kit. Another bonus is it just looks so much better than a stock crossmember we charge less to weld it in at a third of the time with a whole lot less work we used to charge around 800 bucks with us providing the mustang cross member this includes remounting the sheetmetal etc. It is 500 bucks to weld in a kit if you bring it too us with the front end stripped you roll it in and you roll it out My advice buy a kit you will be glad you did
I've done cars with both a kit and the stock crossmembers and I agree the kits look very good and are easy to install. The truck is being built by my son (with my oversite) and thier just isn't enough money in his budget for a kit. He found a pristine stock front end and crossmember for 125.00(friend had it in his garage for more than ten years). Spent the morning cleaning it up now It's all trimmed and ready to go in. Just hoped to see what others have done with their stock MM2 installs. Thanks
Probably best to see if Chubbyone can email you some photos of what they did if they did an AD Chev truck. I was going to do mine that way and still have the MII crossmember out in parts supply. I've since decided to go with a Welders Series kit even though it requires a lot of welding. Having a son who is a pro welded helps there. They did a lot of them around here way back when and many of them are still running the streets 20/25 years later. It used to be that you could walk into the Ford parts counter and buy one over the counter for under 100 bucks but the Cobra kit car guys ate all those up in the early 90's.
You can notch the '48-'54 first series frame, the magic number will be around 27" whatever the distance is between the top A arm bolt slots..............
I have done them when I was just getting started. The labor involved and the looks when completed just weren't justifiable. Limited budget and ambitious? Try this: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=70073
