[/IMG] Can anyone tell me the secret of taking the windshield apart without damaging anything?? Also, is the bottom thin metal piece (the one that holds the seal in place) replaceable?? Mine is rotted out pretty bad.............. Thanks in advance, Mike
There are a couple screws in each corner. Flat blade screw driver should do the trick. (If I remember right) Also, pick up a catalog.. You can learn a lot simply flipping through the pages.
YES.........I removed the two screws and everything that is visible. The problem is that it is stuck pretty tight. I've used plenty of WD40 to soak it. I don't want to hammer on it unless I'm sure of what I'm doing. As far as manual, one will be ordered first thing in the morning. I can't be the ONLY person that has had this problem. I suspect this is the original glass since the date code is still visible. Thanks for the input, Mike
If that bottom piece is rusted out I think you are out of luck. The bottom and sides are all one piece. The only piece that can be removed is the top. Your best bet is to shop for another one. The aluminum reproductions work OK but do not look right. Once you remove the two screws in front you will also need to remove two screws per side that actually hold the support rods in place. once all screws have been replaced it is time to lightly hammer the top piece out. Depending on how rusty it is it could be a real bitch to get out. Mine broke, but a little welding and it was ready to go. When I hammered mine I just laid the hammer on the glass and slid it into the top support. It will probably take some force if it has never been removed before. Good Luck. Mike
Ditto on Rusty Rods method, I broke my glass knocking the top piece off but didn't care. I wouldn't run a stock windshield glass on a Model A anyway. It was caked with rust and was very hard to disassemble so keep at it.
I don't know why you're bringing up a post from 2008........ But since you are and it might be a help to someone else, here's my suggestions: I always break the glass completely out before trying to remove the top. It is much easier to get things apart that way. Once all the bolts are removed, I use a rubber mallet to try and knock the top out. If it doesn't come out with some some gentle taps, you might want to try a little (very little) heat. If the bottom fin is rusted away and you're building a nice car, you should just keep looking for a better one. Trying to fix the fin is pretty much a loosing game.
I never owned a model A. But found this post interesting. Perhaps it will help.GLASS, How to make a model a windshield frame ( 1 2 view all) continentaljohn
