i just bought a stock fuel tank for my f1 from a buddie in town. looking inside you can see theres some rust that kinda rolls around but for the most part it's really clean. i was told i cold maybe just get away with blowing it out with compressed air and calling it good. to be honest that sounds like it would probably work but i just wanted some second opinions, here are some pics i took of the inside, tell me what you think.
If you have ANY question about whether or not you should clean it out, do it. If you have a doubt, then the cleanout will eliminate the doubt, as well and any potential problems. If not for your own piece of mind. -GothY- "If you think I will need to fix this soon, then you'd better do it today."
Think of it as preventative maintenance. Do it now while you have it out and dry. Hell, Eastwood sells this great kit for sealing and preserving the inside of your tank for cheap. I did it on an old rusty Econoline tank I had and it was awesome for years afterwards.
I used a new steel tank & sending unit in my F-3. If I recall correctly, LMC had the tank for around $200. Macs had the sending unit for about $35.00. No one seems to carry the br*** shut off valve at the sump of the tank.
i know that the radiator shop here cleans and seal them for you. call one up, couldn't hurt? but i would clean it if i were you.
Dropped off my A-100 tank and radiator this morning. 85 to clean it out (rinse for rust X2, rinse for varnish X1). There are shadetree ways (section of chain or a bunch of nuts-shake), but after having a fuel issue once, I won't bother with anything but a pro-cleaned tank or new if available and reasonable. To me 800 for a custom stainless is NOT reasonable...
