The truck in my avatar is in need of a new motor. I talked to my friendly neighborhood junkyard and they mentioned they had a 300 six cylinder and it got me to thinking. The truck had a 302 and now I was wondering what I would have to change to make the 300 work. Bellhousing? motor mounts? The wiring should be close the 302 had electronic ignition. The 302 was a '72 block the 300 is a '85.

The bellhousing on the 300 is the same as a 302. I am fairly certain that the motor mounts are different. The stock 300 has more torque than stock 302, and should get better mileage. 300's are quite long, so make sure you have enough firewall and rad clearance. The wiring will be similar, but you may need longer throttle and trans (if automatic) cables since the carb is on the p***enger side of a 300 (see Lokar). 300's look and run great when a equipped with a 4 barrell, headers, and a cam.

IIRC the 300 and 302 share engine mount locations, etc - at least in the 4wd versions.

Trans, bellhousing all of that should be the same. Just the differences of the mounts themselves, everything should be bolt on.

The 300 will bolt up just fine . You can also get some nice speed parts for the 300 too . Just make sure you have enough room to set the engine in . It is longer . I really don't think you will be all that happy with that 6 cyl over a V8 . If you want more or equal power and torque you might want to think twice . Don't get me wrong , the 300 is a strong running engine but you can find more and cheaper parts for a 302/5.0 than you will for the 300/6 cylinder . Just something to consider .

Find a 351W, bolts right in. You won't like the 300 after driving it with a 302. The 6 is too long for the old Ford, anyway.

The 300 6 is a much better truck motor than the lil 302! Welcome to Torqueville!

The 300 6 cylinder share the same bell as the SBF. As for the flywheel I am not sure how the 300 is balanced. That year 302 has the 28 oz balance. The trans and bell will not be a issue.

As for the motor mounts they are different. How mush work to make the 300 fit will all depend on the mounts that were used to put the 302 in your F1. If its the tube cross mount there should be mounts out there to make it work. If its the side mounts that are bolted or welded on the side rails you may have more of an issue.

Myself I would try to find another SBF or a 351 W. If you go that root just remember that the 302 after mid 1981 went to a 50 oz balance but the 351 W stayed with the 28 oz balance.

there is about 10 degrees difference between 302 and 300 motor mounts.
in the 70-80's trucks you had to change the cross member to change motors.

i'm wanting to go from a 223 6 cylinder to a 302. i have no idea why you would want to go backwards. unless you can't find a v8 or if you went with an old 6 for nostalgic reasons. just my opinion.

I have an old F-6, if it doesn't sell I plan on putting a 300 six into it that I got for free. My experience with the 300 is it is a good reliable motor with plenty of low end but it won't out accelerate a 302. If it is cheap I'd say go for it.
