I have about 200 generators mostly Ford, Chrysler, Pontiac, GM from the late 40's and 50's. Should I sell them or scrap them? Had them for about 4 years now. I can get .30 cents a pound for them at scrap yard thats with taking the little fan blade off. Wish I could find someone to buy them as really don't want to scrap em. Most of them are chryslers and Ford looks to be. Wish I new someone that restores them or wants them for decent value. What would you do?

Sell them to Little Wing :p she'll distribute them to a loving home...hahaha...don't EVER scrap stuff like that, we can always use rebuildable or working generators for our vehicles...hell, I'd buy a few if you were closer, I'd hate to ship them...

On second thought, I'll take a couple Chrysler and Pontiac ones if you want to ship them to Minnesota...

Yes, I'll ship anywhere. How many do you want. I'll have to check the pile this weekend and see what I have exactly.

Yes, had them at many swap meets. Carlisle, Chryslers at Carlilsle, Hershey, York street rods. No interest in these. Wish there was a person that buys them and restores them.

If you've got a 50's Mopar and 50's Pontiac generator I'll take one of each...I know a tractor repair guy that will rebuild them for me for cheap...

Okay, I'll pick out 1 ea of both Mopar and Pontiac for you. Will get a price for you then. How would you liked them shipped? I can do Greyhound which is cheapest or anyway you like.

Do you know of a rebuilder's name or company I can contact to sell these to??

That is what I was thinking too.

Wizard, places like Dearborn Classics, Bob Drake or Mac's Antique Auto might be interested in the Ford generators. I don't know the GM rebuilders, but you could try them too.

Most of them should fit in one of those one price USPS boxes. There may even be a rebuilder or two on here who might want the whole batch or what the other folks don't want.
And make the price reasonable enough that guys can feel that they can afford to take a chance on them being rebuildable. Most guys will probably chance five or ten bucks for one but when it gets higher than that plus shipping it becomes a gamble.

Look there finding a home even without my help :D

and yeah don't scrap em,,I hear tales still from junkyard owners how some guy comes and buys up all there generators and regulators and stuff.. with restorers some of those get pretty pricey

you should check out some sites that rebuild them,,I'll bet somewhere on there page they say they buy rebuildable cores.

Dennis Carpenter is another Ford parts giant that may have interest.

Batch 'em together and place 'em on the Evil E! Rebuilders might have a bigger interest in them if they buy 10 of a kind or the ilk.
    Good Luck!

I'd prefer the regular old post office, and I'm only interested in 12v generators if you find any...I'm guessing if you seperated them into groups and sold them via the HAMB classifieds (say one thread per make, with pics of different ones within that make) you'd find a home for most of them through this forum...

If using USPS, look into the Priority Mail options...weight doesn't matter, as long as it fits into the standard boxes they provide. It becomes a much cheaper way to send heavy items.

If you end up sending more than one at a time you will find Fedex ground to have the best deal. Otherwise USPS flat rate boxes for the singles.

  17. Don't scrap them, they must be worth more than $.30/lb. sa cores. Hell, I have a few around here I've collected up just to keep them from getting scrapped and I don't even run a gen. on anything.

Depending on how busy you are, you could learn to rebuild them and have alittle bussiness on the side...;)

Okay, I won't scrap them as the majority of the vote here seems to be.

I will check on the 12 volt generators for GM for you guys that want those and will check for all other 12 volt generators and weigh some this weekend and see what ship prices are going to be for USPS and FEDEX. If you guys that want them send me a PM or if your address is in your profile I will check and send you a PM.

I cleaned out a old tractor trailer from a local junk yard 4 years ago. The old man took them off the cars back in the early 50's before he junked them and put them in the trailer out of the weather. Most appear to be in good shape and spin freely. They probably don't need rebuilt but I never tested any of them. I also cleaned out alot of 1 barrel carbs from the 40's-50's GM, Pontiac, Ford, Chrysler trannys, and other parts in the trailer. Took me a month every Sat to clean it out. The old man threw nothing out.

I also have alot of old Chrysler parts from 1935-1970's. No complete cars. Some N.O.S. Fenders, doors, engines, rears, hubs, hoods, fans, deck lids, most are used parts if anyone has interest in these parts.

I may have some station wagon stuff. What do you need?

  23. 57-61 Mopar stuff can be worth a small fortune, taillight lenses, stainless, body panels, etc. - lot of things not repopped or if they are they're expensive -

I too have a crapload of carbs and generators, the guy in the one junkyard would stick them in cars, trucks, vans, etc. I was able to sell a few carbs - more than paid for the one car I bought that was full of this stuff - but I've never been able to do much with the starters and generators. I think one is like a police car generator, too, it's way oversize compared to most. Most of the stuff is 6V though, so that's why it's dead.

I know one yard where the guy not only scrapped them, his son took them apart and burned them to seperate the copper (by melting it). I have a bucket full of genny brushes I saved from the leftover cases. Always wished I could have gone through them with some of my catalogs to ID them before he'd done that.

  30. You could market them as the start to wind powered energy machines.

It would suck if you had to scrap them. Glad you are trying to save them..
