OK I did a couple searches and didn't find anything on this. I was wondering if anybody has ever or if it is possible to build a 32 roadster you can drive on the street and then with a little effort (bolting in a cage and whatnot) make into something that would pass tech at Bonneville? I am probably dreaming here but it would be so cool if you could do that instead of having a dedicated car for racing. OK anybody got any ideas?

Jimmy Shine built a 29 roadster with a big block that he drove there, raced and drove back.

At least a couple guys have actually done this. I know a couple of dorks from Kansas City who at one point thought they would do the same with an old coupe but man... where does the time go? :)

Rolling Bones have done it. But there was also a guy out of St. Louis. who drove out and went 200 then drove home.

I would think that a bolt in cage might not pass spec, can anyone clarify.

Frank Currie of rear axle fame retired and his boys gave him a huge Ford motor to play with. He built a 32 roadster, and drove it from SoCal to Bonneville. There, they pulled the interior, bolted in a cage and race seat, pulled the windshield, and exhaust. The car was driven over 200, converted to street use, and driven to NorCal to a show and displayed.
Find a copy of Rodders Digest number 82 for pictures. No, it was not easy, nor was it inexpensive. Another fellow who did the drive there go 200 and drive home was the guy who owns Vintage Air. He did it with a killer 54 Studebaker with a huge big block.

bolt in cages are fine. Still has to pass tech though.

This one will be converted to street use once it breaks the record.

That car was built by Kiwi Steve Davies. I believe it also had a small block in it. Drove it there with carburetor on it, put blower intake/blower on it at Bonneville. Ran it then put carb back on for ride back to So-Cal.

Anybody know if the rulebook has the specs on bolt sizes and grades and attach point geometry? This could be fun and I am in. I better get busy....

I was thinking about doing this too with my A-boner, but not competitively, just to get a clocked time.

I think El Mirage has guest runs, but I'm not sure what the rules are.

The 2010 SCTA rule books are now avaiable. I believe you can order one onine at scta-bni.org If you are thinking of running El Mirage or Bonneville a rule book is a vital necessity. You can run as a guest at El Mirage but you still have to meet the rule requirements.

i did in 04 & 05 with a blown flathead 32 which was driven on st. as well. went a 156.5 ,good for a 3 % award. bolt in cage is ok. if done right. all the safety equip. adds up a to a lot of cash. !!!

  13. So-Cal used to have a bolt in cage in their catalog a few years ago that was legal for SCTA. They did also say that it had to be welded in for NHRA. I don't know if its still available or not under the latest rules. Be ready to spend a bunch of money on safety equipment like an approved helmet, fire suit, restraints, fire system, seat, etc. You also you need a HANS device this year too.

I built my street roadster with driving on the street in mind. Its 95% race with the rest street. I built the cage to fit a passenger seat and have as much leg room as I could. It is a tall task to fit all that stuff ( mostly rollcage and safety ) into a roadster body . It is not very comfy to drive, but it is cool. Maybe someday after I am done chasing a record we will drive it to bonneville.[IMG]

Forgive me for reiterating. Get a rule book. There have been a number of changes in the past two years. A 2010 rulebook is an absoute necessity. The tech guys generally tend not to take your word on anything. As a first time racer theywill scrutinise your car closely. Its a bit more involved than "bolting in a roll cage and whatnot". You might think of the USFRA 130 club. I think the rules are a little less stringent than at SpeedWeek. If you are going to run SpeedWeek be prepared to spend some bucks. Firesuits have a specific SFI rating. You will need an SA2000 or better hemet and as your car will be classified as "new" you will need a hans device of some sort. On the SCTA website there is a section that shows the various head restraints available. But whatever you do Bonneville is one of those magic places that you have to race at least once (or twice or as many times as you can cram in before you die) in your lifetime.

The Rolling Bones drove from up state NY to B'ville and raced. They sell a cool DVD that recorded the trip.

It's worth the money Check out their web site

  18. Curry did a Deuce. Drove it there. Made a mild changeover in the hotel parking lot and joined the 2 club.

  19. I believe he also drove the car in the 2006 or 07 Great Race from coast to coast. I saw Jerry Kougle and him in Cumberland, MD both driving their '32s.

  20. Best have over 800hp available too if you want to go over 200mph.

If I recall correctly, the original "Limefire" roadster was built for both street and Land Speed Racing. It was some time ago. Was that a Pete & Jake project?

Cool I'll get a rule book. I think I have the correct suit and helmet already from NHRA regulations but I'll check all that out.

Number one, get the book. Number two go there and watch. You are welcome to spend time in tech watching cars get inspected. For a street driven car, checkout the 130 rules at USFRA.com Its a blast.

Huh, that is pretty cool... Guess I need to pick up a rulebook....

You don't need a rollcage if you have a GPS speedometer iPhone App and a long flat section of highway, do you? ;)
