Ok well been working at this all day, so I figure it is time to ask for some help. I'll try to be as descriptive as possible Working on my 1960 Oldsmobile Dynamic w/ 371 and 2 barrel rochester carb. Electric fuel pump with regulator. Car was running good, went out of town, car sat for about 2 weeks, got back and went to drive it and now she will not idle, but will run if I hold the throttle. First I though maybe the choke wasn't opening. well it was and then I found out that the car will only idle on its own if the choke plate is almost completely shut. So I ***ume maybe a vacuum leak somewhere causing a lean condition. I start looking. I have tried spraying water and wd40 around the carb base, intake manifold and anywhere else there could be a leak no change. Disconnected Brake booster line and plugged it, no change. I am running out of ideas. Could it be something internal with the carb? I did rebuild it about 2 months ago. I am not sure what else to check. Thanks in advance for any help
You've got a plugged idle circuit. When you close off the choke plate it causes the fuel to pull over from the off idle side. I've seen that on almost every old 2bbl Chevy that has been sitting for a while. Di***emble the thing and use brake clean through all the p***ages. Modern gas turns to sludge almost immediately when exposed to air. You're just gummed up internally.
I kind of had a feeling that was probably it. Well off to the parts store for a new rebuild kit. Thanks
Don't waste money on a new kit. Just be careful when you dis***emble it. I wish I could remember which p***age it is that needs blown out. If I remember right they get plugged in the venturi cluster most often.
