Haven't missed a HAMB Drag since it started. We influnce the hamb, the hamb influnences us, old cars are just the medium between it all and us all. Got to love it.

I'm gonna second a HAMB membership. Not that I mind at all. I like supporting something this great.

OK, you want deep? I can go deep...

I was just thinking about this the other day. While it's a big concept, beyond the HAMB, there is certainly evidence that I have been influenced by my time here. There is also evidence that my sanity is slipping, but that's another discussion....

If you had asked me at 18, how would I define success in life, you would have heard me spiel that wife, 3 BR home, 2 car garage, 2.5 kids, blah, blah, blah...

Now, I am 40, looking back on many missed goal lines, feeling better than ever and actually understanding what I want for the first time. The wife and home are here, the kids are well on their way, I have a two car garage that will never be big enough... How will I define success? I hope to find financial independence before I die, but I think it will really be more along the lines of finding, one day, that I am the old guy on the block that the younger ones gather around for tips, tricks and stories. Maybe I show 'em how Tex Mex is supposed to be done in between building and driving that car of my dreams. Most of all, I want my kids to look back on how I did it and strive to do at least as well. That's something that, at least in part, has been influenced by the HAMB.

Oh, and a 10 car garage... at least!

It's helped me to justify buying engines for cars I don't even own.

  7. The continiuity of similar thoughts leads to ideas and confidence to execute said ideas and a place to discuss the acomplishments and failures, with that said, kinda like "Cheers" for traditonal car junkies. Like minded folks helping each other is the bottom line.

The 26+ wonderful HAMBers I've met that I can call "friend",the fact I'm not putting a ribbed bumper on my truck, but nerfs and I'm fretting over my gas filler-is it too modern?
When the topic of hot rods arises,my mind now evaluates whether to clue someone into the HAMB;are they worthy? (That does sound horrible, huh?)

I fold my HAMB shirt and stow it in its own drawer space...Horrible,huh?

This is a great forum with great people.
    And hot rods.

Seeing the community here come together when someone's in need, and being on the receiving end of that gift.
The HAMB has made me into a better, appreciative person.

I've also become a better craftsman with metal, welding, paint, etc...... I'm an allaround smarter bonehead!

It has turned my 54F100 project from street rod to early 60's mild custom. Any body need some Aluminum wheels 5x5-1/2 bolt pattern?

Being new to H.A.M.B., I can only speak to a similar influence which was my neighbor when we lived in Riverside,CA. He had a '51 Merc with a license plate "FUNIN51". I'll never forget the day he finished it and was polishing it in his garage. I rode up on my Huffy (I was about 11) and just gawked at it. I knew right then this guy was on to something...you couldn't bust the smile off his face with a bat. Left a lasting impression on me. Now I am finally in a position to begin a project and I'm lucky to have this board to learn from along the way. Like most of you, I want to keep this tradition alive for the future.

Hmmmmm - besides the Alliance membership maybe it's the Chrysler 331 Hemi neatly tucked away in my garage for "some future project".

HAMB influence...??? Back when I joined (eight years ago) there were a lot less guys here...I wanted to be "part" of it, so I wrote a story about growing up in Iowa in 1960 and the drag races, general car craziness and trouble I got into with my 3-year old '57 Chevy...it was a 'hit' on Friday nite...the next Friday I wrote another and ***led it "The Friday Nite Read", ...it also was popular...so I wrote another...this went on for 22 weeks...to make a long story longer, I ***embled those stories into a 'book' and sold it to a publisher...in the meantime, I was offered a monthly column in GoodGuy's magazine...I've been doing that for six years now...and have written three more books in the meantime...IF you want to read about car craziness and innocent car fun in the sixties, you can find the books at my web site below.

I would have to say that it has influenced me to buy the giant pile of **** in my garage for a car that I dont even have yet. I sure am thankful though, I have gotten to meet some new people and make some great new friends.

I think the HAMB has done alot to solidify who I am and what I like to build and drive and not have to make excuses for it. Early on I was in to 409 cars - I built a really nice one and it was picked apart by all the restorers and such at shows and cruise nights. I got so disgusted with the scene I sold the car. Built/bought several street rods, in to all the shiny stuff, glitz, glitter - all I ended up doing as worrying about hurting something when driving it and not enjoying myself - I got out of the scene, sold the cars.

About 12 years ago, still prior to the HAMB, I informed a buddy of mine I was looking for a nice 40 Std coupe w/flattie and that I just wanted to drive something more traditional/original. I got it, drove it, the flattie developed a problem, and I tore it apart after 3 years to rebuild it in what I thought is a 50s style. I wanted a traditional 50s car but with a flattie to drive long distance, against the norm sort-to-speak, of street rods. I started on this journey, as I had before, with guys telling me it wouldn't work, put a SBC or SBF drivetrain in it, but it wasn't what I wanted. I held fast w/flattie, 5-speed and then the HAMB came along. I lurked for a couple years, marveling at the talent, the balls, the imagination and it has been my inspriation ever since. The 40 coupe has been finished 6 years now and it's a blast to drive and I do drive it. I really love the looks of folks when they realize that it's a flattie doing 75-80 on the interstate that's p***ing them but it's not about the speed - it's about doing what makes me smile, a challenge to be more old skool and traditional, but with reliability and the look of cars from years gone by.

I found my 32 in the avatar and I've been working on it now for at least 6-7 years - it will be out this year and I hope it makes me smile and it's as reliable and fun as I've planned. To me, planning, building and driving an old skool styled hot rod is much more difficult because it's too easy to do it the other way. I researched much of the "look" through Don Montgomery's books of whom I met in 1990 and he autographed one of them. It takes time and effort to be traditional like the cars pictured in his books, rather than to chrome and billet everything to one-up your neighbor. I can appreciate and admire (or not) what they have done but well, it's not done for the right reasons in my mind. Just because it shines and cost boatloads of money does not make a car admirable/memorable.

I owe the HAMB a lot of thanks - I used to follow along with all my old (actually that reads much younger) car buddies and did what they did, followed in their footsteps. With my 40 coupe build I broke away from them and not thinking about what they thought/built, I started to really think and plan on my own. Now they're wanting to be more like me and what I build, and have the feeling of building/driving cars like I have.

Funny - it took me until I'm 60 years old to realize who I am, my style, and my love of hot rods and customs, much of it because of the HAMB, folks who I met through it, and those that have been on here but spoke to me in the HAMB way ( I guess you could call it that - it's a feeling about cars that is shared by all here on this site and it does come out in the spoken word).

Yeah, I know there isn't a dry eye in the crowd right now but I am a product of the HAMB influence. I'm an alliance member in support of it and read most threads from start to finish. Hell I can officially say I spend more time on the site than in my garage but that is going to change once the weather breaks. The HAMB is an addiction, let me tell you. Keep up all the great work guys - you and the HAMB are an inspiration to the gospel of traditional hot rodding.

Keep it coming and take it to the streets .....

It prompted me to get dsl instead of my old dial up so I could see the photos in less than the 30 minutes it previously took to download.Man what a difference!

It prompted me to realize that there can still be a "community" of like minded people that can, and do, help one another. In small or big ways, I have seen selfless acts of kindness and respect.

It has led me to be humble, admit that I may not know what I am doing, ask questions, but in the end, to have the courage to give it a shot. Mistakes are how we learn, but with the knowledge and experience here to be shared, learning doesnt always have to come from mistakes alone.

It has also reminded me to be patient. Whether it is to not rush my project or not flame someone posting their ideas that I may not understand or agree with.

Who could have imagined that cruising for hot rod pics would end up with with this?!

  27. Sometimes I become way too overwhelmed with the talent and ideas on here that I have to step away for a couple of weeks to re-focus on what I want to do with my ride.

The HAMB has aggravated my obsessive compulsive behavior...causing me to constantly check the HAMB website for interesting, cool stuff on which I spend inordinate amounts of time. This may necessitate years of expensive therapy to correct.

The HAMB has encouraged me down the path of so loving my car (again) that I neglect the hubby, got a garage, have all sorts of bad ideas to do once I get the money and finally want to learn all I can so I can fix her and take care of her by myself. :) And here I had almost thought I had grown out of that car phase as Mom calls it. Looks like I'll be a lifer.
