Regardless of weather or not his car is taken apart, I still don't understand what part of these cars are ugly? The taillights might not be perfect, but they definitely dont detract from the car by any means. I agree with the others; if you think this car is ugly, find a different one. If you want a pro-street, go by a Chevelle, and leave the real cars alone. Just my opinion.

That car is not ugly...well not now , when I was a kid my mom and dad bought a brand new 55 Buick Special...Back then I thought the older Buicks where ugly and the new Buick was fine....Well ,that was a life time ago.. what was once ugly is now cool. ..to me anyway.

  8. I think your attempt at fitting in or at being humerous failed before you even hit "submit reply". Are there some cars from the 50's that could have been designed better? Yes. Are there some cars from the 50's that are hard to look at stock? Yes. The 53 Buick however is not one of them. Perhaps you should have purchased a different car...

  12. Just a quick description of what I did to the '53 here (it was getting late when I posted last night). The wheel well thing is obvious, but I did lose the handles, gas door, hood ornament, front bumper "intakes", and the top tailight (Caddy bullet in the stock lower) as well as lowered the car a bit more... If the one your doing is the same model as the one in the pic, I think you've got a terrific canvas for a easy/good looking custom!

'56 Packard Taillights just make everything better. It's like they could cause world peace almost.

    James.D!

    Like it very mucho!!

I have a new pair of 56 Packard lenses that i bought some years ago for this project, nice job you did with them when you leaved the chrome and backup lights.
I have a thought about sunken standing -51 Ford big oval lenses .
Wanna add a Pontiac -55 rear bumper to it, but they are rare.

    Thanks again!!

Nothing ugly about it. I'd leave it alone or name me a price., I'll get it off your hands.

I bet your family is beautiful too. Keep 'em all.

There is nothing ugly about early 50's Buicks. I can see what you mean. The Buick rear bumper seems an afterthought especially compared against the respective Pontiacs and Olds' of the same year. The tailights aren't as bad as the rear bumper but I don't think they flow as well as other car makes. The small bullet shapes seem out of place. The rear quarter tails come to a rounded edge and the bullets don't enhance that look. What you need is a tailight that fits inside that rounded edge and it a rounded edge itself. What I think fits in there nicely is '54 Mercury or Lincoln tailights as well as '56 Chrysler tailights. The rear bumer needs bumper ends that hug around the rear quarters as well. Look at the '48 and '49 Buick rear bumpers. Look at the '53 and 54 Ford rear bumpers. Even a '52 Ford front bumper would look good on the back of the Buick. Even the '52 Kaiser rear bumper as well as the tailights I think would flow well.
I have pondered over this and looked at numerous cars to see if another maker would work on the Buick. The reason being is that I have 2 '53's sitting in my driveway and get to look at them everyday.

Although the James D mod is really good, I'm compelled to say that your car is too nice to do any mods. It is a beautiful example of a '53 Buick survivor!

    Hi!
I had a Ford 54 front bumper that I tried as rear bumper, but it was to narrow for the body, I borrowed a 55 Chevy rear bumper too,but also to narrow.
But the 53 Olds super 88 rear bumper is good looking and share the Buicks body,so it would fit nicely.
The 54 Mercury rear bumper is nice, but don´t know the width of it.

Ps. I´m just having the half of your "problems", because you have 2 Buicks:D

Rogga, this is where the Custom name comes from:D There is never anything to wide or not enough. If you have a welder and a saw, you can go far. Nothing wrong with cutting a bumper and adding some metal to it, to make it wider. If its too long cut the length you need out of it and reweld. For some reason, I have a strange fascination with grilles, bumpers and tailights. I love to look at fifties cars and imagine what would flow well.

I had a '50 Caddy bumper on my '53 buick Cdan for a while. It was too wide from the start, so I cut it down to fit. Here is a pic of it in the early stage.

I am now working on a '50 Buick front grill and bumper for it. The '50 bumper is too wide as well, so I am cutting that down to fit. I had a '55 Pontiac rear bumper on the back as well but I didn't like it a whole lot, so I just used the center bumper bar from the pontiac on the stock bumper for now. I am in the process of mounting a '49 Buick bumper to see how well it will flow.

I love '53 Buicks and I would buy every one I saw if I had the cash. I just think theres something special(pun intended) about that year. I would customize every one different.

Your possibilities are endless, a stock car is your blank canvas. Try to look as many 50's cars you can to get some ideas. You'll be cuttin and welding in no time. Remember, A little goes a long way.

I like James D's version with the Packard taillights..... I was thinking either those or 55 Chevy. I think the rear of the trunk lid could take a slight pie cut too. Dunno why everyone is getting so bent... the guy wants to turn a car into a custom. Isn't that what happened to modified cars for the last 60 years?

Me too, you could cut the quarters and put '52 Buick taillights and chrome fins on it, that would improve the looks. Or just trade for a '52.

Here is a different take on the same body style, 53 Olds. All original, just cleaner, sometimes less is better.

for a more 'rounded' look, how about some '56 Lincoln tail-lights ?

(got Adobe Elements, but don't know how to do these kinds of mods)
